Search engine optimization, is when you format your web pages so that they are most likely to be found and indexed by search engines. People are starting to want to make their choices based on what they themselves can know or find out. They are increasingly coming to rely on information that can be provided by them through the World Wide Web.

The basis for SEO is broken down into two separate areas. One is on-page work when you program your page to make it relevant to the targeted phrase or phrases. In order to ensure that your website shows up during a search engine search, you have to make sure that your websites hit specific targeted phrases that are of interest to the people you want to attract.

To make your pages on-page work for you, you have to make sure that the keyword density is at the right level or percentage. If you write the content on the desired keyword or phrase and fail to get that keyword in the content, you have just failed at on-page. If you cant find your page then your target market will not find your page.

The next part is off-page SEO. It is a link campaign when you link your web page to other web pages that might be frequented by your target market. You usually do this with what it called Anchor Text. Anchor text is the clickable text - usually coloured or highlighted blue - which you can click to be taken to another page or website.

Once again, you have to make sure your website comes out as relevant. You can not just use your company name - unless your company name is also indicative of the services you offer - otherwise, your target market might skip you over.

Searching for information over the internet is based entirely on links. You search a keyword and your results are a huge list of links. You then choose a link and click that link and read that page before you have to click another link to go to another page. In order to make the internet work for you, you must make your link click-able.

Here are some search engine optimization tips.Fine tune your TITLE tag. The appearance of key words within the page title is one of the biggest factors in determining Web site's rank in many search engines. You must make your title unique but at the same time easy to understand.

It must state what a searcher might be able to find when they click on your link. This doesnt just go for your home page but also the other pages that make up your website. Change your page titles to include some of the site's key words. The more times a key word shows up in the sites content the greater the chance that a page will appear with a strong ranking in a query for those key words.

Create gateway pages that are specific to the focus of each site. Gateway pages are designed specifically for submission to a search engine. They are tuned with a specific set of key words, boosting the chance that these key words will be given a heavy weight and your web sites rank will increase.

Create several copies of a page one for each set of key words. These pages will be used as entry points only, to help people find the site. Each gateway page then can be submitted separately to the search engines.

Ensuring that site technology won't confuse the search engines

Technology being built into a site can confuse the search engine spiders. Frames, CGI scripts, image maps and dynamically generated pages are all recently created technology that many search engines don't know how to read. If the search engine does not understand the tag, it might not recommend the page.

Setting up a NOFRAMES section on the page. While many browsers support frames, for the sake of simplicity, have a noframe version of your page. Every page that uses frames should include a NOFRAMES section on the page. This tag will not affect the way a page looks but it will help a page get listed with the major search engines. The NOFRAMES tag was invented by Netscape for backward compatibility with browsers that didn't support the FRAME and FRAMESET tags.

Perform maintenance checks. HTML errors on a page are not only embarrassing but can hinder a search engine spider's ability to index a site. It can keep a search engine from reading a page or cause it to be viewed in a manner different from how it was intended. This can turn searchers off on your site.

Submit your site to a search engine submission service.
Use an auto submission service. Most search engines like Alta Vista, HotBot and InfoSeek automatically spider a site, index it and hopefully add it to their search database without any human involvement.

There are several online resources for auto submissions. You might also want to look into social bookmarking sites where users can submit links to pages according to key words. A social bookmarking site provides a list of links to relevant websites that users can click on to.
