It is common these days for large corporations to outsource their customer service jobs to home-based staff. The national news has covered this trend. It is a great idea because the corporations can keep costs down but still employ local staff if they wish. They do not have to outsource the jobs overseas. This can alleviate any language or cultural barriers which the customer service industry is infamous for. A customer service job can also be called a call center job.

Customer service covers a range of different jobs and is an industry. A customer service agent would accept incoming phone calls from home. Perhaps the job would be providing technical support, answering general inquiries or processing orders. It is not a problem if you do not like talking on the telephone because some customer service desks do not need you to use the phone. Help desk representatives use live chat over the internet and many companies are choosing this option now as an alternative to phoning. A help desk representative can provide assistance ranging from general information about a company and its goods or services to technical support. A lot of the help desk representatives work from home.

There are other customer support functions in existence, such as answering emails, returning phone calls and much more.

Customer service is actually an industry upon itself and there are many types of jobs that fall under this umbrella. As a customer service agent you may accept inbound calls for a company from your home. You may be processing orders, providing technical support to a company's existing customers, or answering general inquiry calls.

There are customer service jobs suited to nearly every kind of personality. Usually a customer service agent will need quite a thick skin because some of the customers who will contact you will not be happy and will be contacting you to complain. It is important to remember that they are not annoyed with you but with the company you represent and you are the only link they have to communicate.

Don't worry too much about that because there will also be a lot of people who are happy about the service and grateful for the help and support you give them.

It is not easy to find a job like this but it is possible. Read the listings on a job board with care to ensure it is not a scam. If you put quotation marks around your search term, that will bring up better results. A website which specializes in telecommuting is a good place to look as there will be fresh job leads in the field you are looking for.

You will probably need a phone, a home computer and a high speed internet connection. These expenses will not be reimbursed. If the company needs you to use a special type of software, they should provide you with this for free. The rates of pay can vary greatly, depending on the individual job.
