Is Your Child Motivated Enough?

Oct 13, 2007
Have you heard of the term student motivation? Student motivation deals with the factors that encourage a child to participate in school. Many a time you will see a child that shies away from group discussions and events and such a child is said to lack motivation. The reasons may be many and so are the solutions, depending on the personality of the child in question. On a broader level, you could differentiate student motivation into two realms, extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation.

The two terms are self-explanatory. A child, who performs well due to external factors such as reward or punishment incentive, is said to have extrinsic motivation. One, who reaches his goals simply because of an inner desire to achieve a personal goal, displays an example of intrinsic kind of motivation.

Students often are first motivated in their homes, even before they attend school ever. A home in which love and peace abide in good measure, is a healthy place for a child's mind to develop. On the other hand a home where disrespect and hatred abide, could lead a child to have negative emotions of low self-esteem. Encourage your child to be motivated towards learning by giving him an answer to any question that he may put forth.

Do not ever let the child feel like you do not have time to answer these questions. When you answer their questions, the children are encouraged to ask more and therefore learn more in life. These are the stages where you need to lay a good foundation of motivation for your child, so that he or she remains motivated to do well and with confidence throughout life.

A child's first encounter with the outer world is the school. We all remember our first teachers at school. It is the duty of every teacher to serve almost as parents do, and to never let any child get feelings of low self esteem. Encourage every child in the class to participate in group activities.

Apart from these basic factors that affect a child's student motivation lie issues such as a basic interest in the subject. This is a relative category - what some may find interesting may be boring to another student. Here, the teacher's role becomes ever more important where they need to motivate a child to do well in a subject that does not hold his interest. As a teacher, you should always make it a point to point out when a child does well and gets something right.

At the same time, when he gets it wrong, do explain patiently how and where this happened. Many children in the past have lost an interest in a subject simply because they had no encouragement to study the subject.
