Cowlick Electrolysis: When Styling Won't Cut It

Oct 13, 2007
While cowlicks--those self-determining tufts of hair that permanently bow to no form of hair control devise or substance yet known--can be cute on first-grade boys, they definitely lose their appeal on anyone over the age of puberty. The classic cowlick belong to Alfalfa of the 1930s Our Gang Saturday afternoon movie features, and many an unfortunate lad has been saddled with the nickname "Alfalfa" ever since.

Cowlicks Don't Go Quietly

If you're someone frustrated by a cowlick, you might benefit from knowing what is causing it. Your hair has grown into a pivot, which means that the individual hairs in one small section of your scalp are all heading in separate directions. The only way to eliminate the rugged individuality displayed by each hair is to eliminate the hair itself, through cowlick electrolysis.

There are other, temporary measures for controlling cowlicks, such as styling your hair to accommodate them, but cowlick electrolysis will remove the cowlick and let you style your hair to accommodate your tastes. But cowlick electrolysis is not a simple procedure, even though there are many celebrities rumored to have had it performed in secret. If you, like them, are determined to free yourself from your cowlick more than short-term, cowlick electrolysis is a far better option than repeated painful waxing or cosmetic surgery.

Enough cowlick electrolysis has been performed to suggest that it is effective in evening out the hair growth patterns, although there is some indication that the unruly hairs will reappear after a long period, necessitating further cowlick electrolysis.

Like waxing, cosmetic surgery, and other hair removal options, cowlick electrolysis has a price tag, and a somewhat hefty one. It will also require more than one session, and is usually billed on a per-session basis. It may take some time for the full effects of the procedure to be noticeable, and it is often painful.

Alternatives To cowlick electrolysis

If you think the negatives of cowlick electrolysis outweigh its positives, you can search around for a hairstylist creative enough to work with your cowlick. There are those for whom regular haircuts are sufficient to tame a cowlick, and others who have learned to use styling gels and creams to manage their cowlicks from day to day. Cowlick electrolysis is the best option for long-term results, but it may be one which just won't work for you.
