Girlfriends' Pet Names: To Call Or Not To Call?

Oct 15, 2007
Very few things connote ownership or belonging more than the giving of a name. Some people do it with their boats, others with dear possessions. Still, others give names to pet animals. All of which show the attachment the caller has towards what he or she has named.

This is not to say that giving your girlfriend a pet name would connote owning her in the strict sense of the word, but doing so shows and demonstrates your affectionate attachment to your mate.

So should you give your girlfriend a pet name?

By all means, do so, but only if she is comfortable with it. Not all women like to be called by a name other than what she was born with. Others shun the idea thinking it is demeaning. If your girlfriend holds this opinion or something of this sort, then keeping on calling her by a pet name just might be the beginnings of the end. So be careful.

Even if she is amenable to the idea, be sure to just use it only on occasions she is comfortable with that. Somehow, calling her hot sexy mama in front of her parents at dinner may not be the smartest idea in the world.

Also, use the name as sparingly as possible. Besides the fact that you could be ignoring her real identity that's represented by her name, using it all the time takes away the tickle a pet name can bring when it is used only on occasion. Besides, you wouldn't want your girlfriend to tire of the name, but instead be giddy as a teenager every time you use on her.

Ideas for pet names for your girlfriend

Depending on the kind of relationship you have and on the occasion you use it, it is very possible to have more than one pet name for your significant other.

Sweet and cuddly

These go along perfectly with teddy bears and chocolates. And are best for the kind of girl that can never get enough of Sleepless in Seattle. Some common pet names are:

- Honey / Honeybunch
- Baby / Baby bear / Cuddly bear
- Sweetie / sweetie pie / sweetheart
- Bunny rabbit

Naughty and nasty

Is it hot in here or what? If just the thought of your main squeeze gets your blood flowing, these pet names may be just her type:

- You sexy thing
- Hot stuff / Hot mama
- Love machine
- Naughty / Nasty girl
- (others too risqué for general publication)

Now you may probably be thinking? Should these names exist separate from each other? Not necessarily.

If you're lucky, your girlfriend may be sweet and cuddly one day and be naughty and nasty the next. If this is the case, feel free to switch between these pet names to suit the occasion and the mood.

The idea of giving a pet name for your girlfriend can be a way for you to show just how much you think of her. It shows her that you see her as someone that belongs and fits perfectly with you - something hardly any woman would not swoon over.

While a heart-to-heart discussion regarding pet names for her is not totally necessary, it will work best if you ask her quite matter-of-factly how she would feel about having a pet name given by you. At least by doing so, you'll know what kind of pet name to use and when to use it.

Also remember that a pet name is a kind of attachment you make between you and your girlfriend. If you're just starting out together, giving her a pet name right away may make her think that the relationship might be going a bit too fast, making her paranoid, putting your relationship in question.

On the other hand, no other pet name speaks attachment more than by placing the word "My" before her given name. It shows you treasure her and hold her close to your heart, as she is part of it. Some may construe as "ownership" but for the truly romantic, it is you acknowledging that she has become an important part of you.

The idea with pet names is to make the person feel special. You may be totally fine with it, but your focus should be how she feels. If it makes her feel good, then by all means do so. But if she has reservations about it, either stop altogether or use it on occasions when her guard is down.

Pet names have the potential to liven up a relationship and further cultivate the bond between you and your girl. Use it wisely and the connection can only get better.
