Five Factors Which Can Cause Menopause Weight Gain

Fighting menopause weight gain is an uphill battle for many women but if you understand why it's happening to you then you can put into place a plan to fight it.

Yes, you can diminish the chances of putting on those extra pounds when menopause arrives in your life. Weight gain is one of a woman's greatest fears but if you believe the hype surrounding it's connection to menopause and that it's just a fact of life, then you'll most certainly gain weight.

So what causes menopause weight gain? Let's take a look at some of the factors which can contribute to extra poundage during this natural phase in a woman's life.

- Estrogen deficiencies and the slow down of the metabolism.
- Hormone replacement therapy which can lead to an increase in both appetite and fat retention.
- As we age things tend to slow down a bit and that includes our metabolism.
- There are many symptoms associated with menopause which can dampen a woman's enthusiasm for exercise. These include mood swings and depression.
- These symptoms not only diminish enthusiasm for exercise but they can lead to an increase in appetite

These are just five reasons why weight gain is associated with menopause. What you need to realize is you can prevent it with a little preparation and strong will.

Fighting the symptoms is one thing but having the presence of mind to experience the symptoms and then be conscious enough to realize if you simply give in to them, your weight can spiral.

Here's what you need to understand. Menopause itself is not responsible for women gaining weight. On it's own, it's simply part of nature's evolutionary process. However, indirectly it can present the conditions which can lead to a woman ballooning in weight.

If you go down the HRT route then keep in mind the effects it can have on your hunger. This is the time you need to be aware of. Watch your eating habits closely and avoid the temptaion of having a snack simply because it satisfies an urge. Fat intake should be closely monitored while an increase in fiber-based foods should be considered.

Have the determination to set up a regular exercise routine. No exercise at this stage of your life is a big invitation to gain extra pounds especially if this is coupled with bad eating habits.

Exercise can be as simple as taking a 30 minute walk everyday. At least you are moving your body and working your muscles. By showing some discipline early can lead to good habits and routine and a check on menopause weight gain in your life.
