Interviewing a Wedding Photographer - Some Tips

Oct 20, 2007
Before you make the final decision on your choice of the wedding photographer, you will need to evaluate all the potential photographers. You will certainly consider the fees they charge. You will also take the styles and personalities of them into your consideration. In this article, the way to deal with the photographers when you are meeting them at the first time is concerned.

You will need to make a list of potential photographers before you contact them for arrangement of meeting. You may probably collect the information from the web and bridal magazines. If you are collecting the information on the web, you can search using Google or Yahoo to get your targets. On the other hand, you may also go to some wedding forums or discussion boards to ask if there is any information you may find useful.

After you have completed your list of potential photographers, you will start contacting them for meetings. In fact, you are not just going to meet them without any preparation. If a particular photographer has a website, you may study the website a little bit. If you find any images or photos you specially like, you may ask if you can see the real photos in advance.

When you are meeting a photographer, you have to bear in mind that you need to lead the whole conversation. Of course you will need the input and suggestions from the photographer. However, it is even more important that you let him or her understand exactly what you want or what you prefer. Otherwise you will just miss the whole point of meeting different photographers.

Besides, studying the portfolio or the photos a photographer took in the past is a must. You have to be careful that some photographers may give you some photos which have been taken long time ago. You have to ask for recent photos instead of the old ones. By doing that you will know the recent style and technique of him or her better. In fact there is nearly no point to see the old photos since the photographer may have already changed his or her style of taking photos.

If possible, you should also ask for reference from the recent clients of the potential photographers. You can know how he or she will perform exactly by talking to and discussing with the couples who have hired him or her before. However, you need to be critical when you are talking to the couples. Since these couples may have bias towards the photographer and you should not trust everything the couples tell you.

You will also need to ask how many photographers or assistants will be working on your project. It can render problems if only the photographer himself or herself is going to work on your project. As I always suggest, two photographers as a backup and safety measure is always a good idea. You should never choose him or her if he or she is going to work with you on his or her own.
