15 Simple Tips for Dealing With Insomnia

Oct 25, 2007
Whether it is ways in which to help you sleep better, or coping with the fact that you do in fact have insomnia, here is a list of things to do or think about in regard to your sleeping problems:

Less caffeine
You may not realize just how powerful this substance is, but it will keep your brain running the entire night.

It does not have to be anything fancy, but a nice rubdown from your partner could be just what you need to feel at ease.

Check in with your doctor
If your sleeping problems carry on for more than a week, it might behoove you to get some medical advice on the next course of action.

It might be easier said than done, but do not let the weight of the world fall on your shoulders. Calm down, head to bed, and save the worry for the daylight hours.

Stop snacking late at night
If you feel hungry after dinner, then try a piece of fruit or a glass of water. But try to cut out any of it at least three hours before you go to sleep. It will allow your body a chance to process the food properly in time for you to rest.

You are not alone
It might comfort you to know that millions of people all over the world struggle with some form of sleeping disorder. It is a common occurrence. However:

Do not write off your problem as nothing!
While others share your nighttime restlessness, this does not mean that it is healthy. Find the proper outlets to ensure you a good night of eight hours of sleep.

Stop taking naps
Sometimes the power nap is all you can fit in, but you are doing more harm than good in the long run. Your body needs to be at complete rest, including rapid eye movement. You cannot achieve that in twenty minutes of shut-eye.

Leave off the television or radio
Many people feel that they can only fall asleep with background noise, but this is extremely disruptive to sleep patterns. Unless it is very soothing, low-volume music, it is highly discouraged.

It is quick, painless, and extremely pleasant. Breathe in a nice sweet smell on your sheets to lull you off to sleep.

Complete major tasks ahead of time
Clutter in your life can produce a cluttered mind, which will surely keep you up at night. Finish important things during the day so you can rest easy and get a fresh start in the morning.

Not only will this help you to clear out the mental clutter, but it will also bring your body toward a restful state, and you will rest more comfortably.

Shut out distraction
Simple things like closing the door or wearing ear plugs or blinders can make a huge difference, and will let external forces impact your sleep.

Test out mattress/bedding
Perhaps your sleep troubles are caused by a lumpy or old mattress and some rough sheets. It's all about the soft bedding.

Discontinue self-medication techniques
If you find yourself popping over-the-counter sleep aids on a regular basis, it is time to call it quits. This is not a healthy way to deal with insomnia, and could worsen your symptoms overall.
