Design Elements In Kitchen Remodeling

Oct 29, 2007
When considering a major kitchen remodeling exercise, think of the kitchen in it's entirety; think of the layout of the entire kitchen and the optimum utilization of space, even if this requires changing the locations of many of the features & appliances. The plan should aim at providing a user friendly layout while still maintaining functionality of the kitchen.

Functionality will be served better if you think of the daily activities that focus on the use of the stove, the refrigerator, the dish washer and such other appliances. Their placement should be such that they all will be within easy reach so the amount of time and effort involved in preparing and serving meals is reduced.

If you're in the market for new appliances, and have a family or like to entertain, you may wish to plan for an extra large fridge. Living with a fridge that's too small is more time consuming than you think, as putting food away, and finding the ingredients you're looking for can be a hassle. People who upsize their fridge when they renovate are almost always happy they did.

Since the time your kitchen was originally designed and laid out, lifestyles have changed and now kitchen has become the focal point of the home; it has become more of a social center for your family & friends. The kitchen remodeling should be so planned to allow those preparing the meal to take part in the social interaction while still attending to guests and other family needs.

Kitchen islands - the new trend

In keeping with the new role of the kitchen in the family's life, many homeowners have changed over to the concept of providing a kitchen island where previously a small table used to be. The kitchen island is commonly placed in the middle of the kitchen floor if sufficient space is available around it for easy movement. It separates the cook from the rest of the room and still maintains an open floor plan. Additional floor space can be provided to the kitchen by fully or partly removing the wall to the adjoining dining room if necessary.

The kitchen island is often provided with a sink or a stove top and a dish washer. If the space permits, a microwave can also be provided. This way most of the food preparation and clean up could be done at the island. Most homeowners prefer to have a seating area with bar stools at the island. This way the island is very helpful for daily activities like breakfast for the family, kids' homework as well as for entertaining friends.

The island also provides extra cabinet space under the countertop. Items for cleaning and extra pots and pans can be stored here, and often you'll find a wine rack built in, which adds to the style of the kitchen. Islands are also an eye catching feature of your kitchen, and will greatly enhance the look & décor of your home. Take a look at pictures of kitchens on the web and in magazines to get a feel for what you like, and what style & color scheme is right for you.
