Tunisia is the Smallest Country in Africa

The smallest country in North Africa is Tunisia. The capital of this country is Tunis. Around forty percent of the country is composed of the Sahara desert. Tunisia is a surprisingly fertile land. It has six national parks.

Prior to 1958 education in Tunisia was only available to a privileged minority. It is now given a high priority.

The main airports for international predominantly charter flights are Tunis-Carthage, Monastir and Jerba. Crossing by ferry from France or Italy is a popular option.

Tunisian restaurants are generally good, safe and inexpensive. Prices at restaurants are best if you go for a full meal. Fried fish is a delicacy here. Couscous is a kind of national symbol of Tunisia. It is a semolina grain made from hard wheat. Tunisian women remoisten the dried grains and cook a kneaded mass of them in a special colander, so-called couscoussier, in the steam of the boiling fish, meat or vegetables.

The night life is more designed to cater to male travellers than to females. Alcohol is freely available and women need not feel intimidated. The resort towns of Sousse and Tunis are most likely have places that women can go to at night. When here you have to forget major boozing sessions, wild dancing nights.

The Medina of Tunisia is the citys old quarter dating back to the 12th to the 16th century. Located in the old city the Medina, the Souks offer a selection of objects. The choice is yours, handcarved olive wood, salad bowls, kitchen articles, vases, lamps, bracelets and solid wood. Tunisia's main carpet and rug centres are Kairouan, Tunis, Tozeur and Jerba.

In southern Tunisia is Chott el Jerid it is a huge and dry salt lake situated in the most western part of the country. Only a traces of the water can be seen. The water surface changes it colour, from grey and blue up to intensively red, it depend of the prevalent kind of minerals in it.

Matmata is in the southern section of Tunisia is one of the places where scenes in Star Wars were filmed. The houses are vertically dug into the earth. The open-to-air central space has cave-like rooms dug into the sides. These houses were made to protect against the brutally hot desert sun as well as the cold desert nights.

Friguia Wild life park make you feel like you are in Africa with it African carved wood and there are lots of animals to see including Tigers, Elephants, Giraffes and Crocodiles.
