How To Lose Weight

Oct 30, 2007
In 2000 there were almost 108 million Americans who were overweight. Obesity is a serious problem and is predicted to reach epidemic proportions in the near future. One way to help prevent this problem is to educate the public on the risks of being overweight.

By carrying around those unwanted pounds you put yourself at risk for heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, arthritis and high blood pressure.

Losing weight helps prevent and control these diseases. The popular weight loss methods available these days do not provide long lasting results.

It is much better to devise a healthy weight loss program that provides results for a lifetime. It is important to set realistic goals. Do not expect to lose a large amount of weight in a short period of time.

In our attempt to lose weight, skipping meals is one of the the worst habits to develop. Lifestyle changes are much more useful than crash dieting. Here's the secret. Three wholesome meals per day. They should be throughly chewed. Your diet should consist of unprocessed or prepared foods. There should be plenty of whole grain, fresh vegetables and fruit. And, or course, no eating before bed.

If you can integrate these basic lifestyle changes into your routine you're about halfway home. The second part of the equation is some sort of physical activity.

The truth of the matter is that it's nearly impossible to lose weight when you lead a sedentary lifestyle. When you exercise you'll look and feel better. You'll also lose weight more quickly.

It's never too late to get in shape. It's not necessary to join a gym. There are many ways to exercise to aid your weight loss program. Personally, I prefer walking to just about anything else. It's an easy habit to integrate into your life. It's low impact and is available to almost anyone.

There is, of course, a simple formula to assist in your weight loss efforts. Merely consume fewer calories than you burn. This is, unfortunately, easy to misinterpret. Counting calories by itself seldom works over the long haul. Also, there's the good chance that you'll be hungry and along with that, miserable.

My way of thinking is a little different. You should eat as much as you wish, with the following caveats. Good, wholesome, quality food which is not processed or prepared before hand. Chew until your food becomes liquid. By chewing your food well you'll become satisfied much sooner and will be less likely to overeat.

There are great benefits associated with losing weight. Contrary to popular belief, losing weight should be easy. When you approach your weight loss program as lifestyle changes as opposed to dieting, the weight lose will become a secondary benefit and effortless.

The following are a few of the important advantages from losing those excess pounds.

Healthy weight loss will help prevent high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

If you are relatively healthy you can probably embark on a weight loss and walking program without any difficulty. However, if you have any medical problems or are being treated by a doctor, please consult with your physician first.
