Home Water Damage And When To Hire A Professional To Clean Up

Nov 2, 2007
When it comes to caring for our homes, most of us like to take care of things ourselves when ever possible. It can save us a lot of money over time when we do small repair jobs and minor home improvements without hiring outside help.

When we do feel the need to get additional help with a project or repair that might be a little too much to handle by ourselves, sometimes we have been guilty of taking the cheapest way out and hire the neighbor boy to rake the leaves, or let Uncle Joe fix the plumbing under the kitchen sink.

Most of the time minor things like this are ok, but sometimes we are much better served if we spend the extra money to hire a professional for some jobs.

If you have ever had major flooding in your home, then you know what an undertaking it can be to restore your home and furnishings back to the way they were. Some things can not be saved and how well the clean up is done is vital to the health and safety of you, your family, and your home.

We are not talking about slightly overfilling the bathtub here. We are talking about major flooding where there are a couple of inches or more of water standing throughout your home. Even worse is when Mother Nature sends a devastating flood like what those people who endured Hurricane Katrina had to deal with where they had several feet of water in their homes.

You have two real choices when it comes to cleaning up a disaster like major water damage. You can attempt to do the job yourself, but make no mistake it is a huge undertaking. Even a few inches of water throughout the home can take an enormous amount of time and energy to clean up right.

If you do not think you can handle the job, this is no time to hire Uncle Joe either. Home flooding can cause your homes structure to be in jeopardy and the potential for dangerous mold to develop is likely. A professional is the best way to go.

When hiring a professional clean up company for home flooding, make sure the company is licensed and insured themselves. If they cause additional damage in their clean up process, you want them to be responsible.

Check their background and talk with some of their other clients if possible. Check with the Better Business Bureau to ensure no complaints have been made concerning the quality of their work or not finishing the job. There are many people who have gotten taken advantage of in situations like Hurricane Katrina.

Make sure there is no misunderstanding about what work they are responsible for and never make complete payment until the job has been done to your satisfaction
