What You Should Know About Green Furniture

Sep 2, 2010
Consumers are trying harder and harder to be eco-friendly these days, and their efforts extend into the outdoor furniture category too. Until recently, the options available were slim and expensive and didn't always incorporate interesting designs. That's all changed and now there are well-made, interesting designs to be found in all price categories.

Much of this is due to manufacturers becoming more conscious and in tune with public awareness of the environment. They now recycle old material and avoid chemicals which can do harm. The concern about future recycling is also of great importance to them. This is fantastic news for consumers and for the environment itself, and the techniques used don't make outdoor furniture necessarily cost an arm and a leg.

By far, the greenest products out there today are those made of 100% recycled plastic. The process of injection molding has advanced to a point that more stylish designs are available. While some are traditional and even look like wood, others are slick and modern in design. The days of the stacking chairs from discount stores are drawing to a close, and consumers who used to hide them can now have products to be proud of instead.

Also being recycled is aluminum. Today, 31% of all aluminum is being recycled and some terrific designs in the process. Aluminum products can be found in all price ranges and design styles, and is a great investment for those who want the lightness and convenience of a non-rusting product. Finding either contemporary or traditional has never been easier, and the ability to recycle furniture when it is no longer needed is a huge bonus.

Teak has long been a favorite for those concerned about ecology, but teak is no longer a sustainable wood. This is in large part due to gross mismanagement of forests in Indonesia, Thailand and India. Many forests have been degraded and won't return anytime soon. But American teak forests are under proper management and are still providing the fantastic beauty of outdoor furniture. It may be more expensive but the consumer who makes the purchase can also be assured that it is the right expenditure for ecology.

Wicker and rattan are mainstays in the outdoor furniture market, and while both are more fragile, they are both eco-friendly materials. Rattan, cane, and bamboo are grown in abundance and there's no likelihood of mismanaging their growth in their native tropical climates. While they require more maintenance and protection from the elements, they can last for years. Repainting or varnishing them makes them appear new again and the resale value on older is pieces is very good.

Many manufacturers have jumped on the eco-friendly bandwagon, and provide extensive information on their websites about how they are going about being more environmentally friendly. The consumer can now understand where the materials come from as well as the manufacturing process. Many of them also contribute a certain amount of their profits to environmental groups.

Going green is now not only sensible but so much of the outdoor furniture that is being designed and manufactured is aesthetically pleasing and stylish. From recycled plastic to eco-friendly wood fiber composites, it now means that being green doesn't have to look less than pleasing. And, finding it is also simpler. From discount stores to high end designer only companies, the choices are big.

Being eco-friendly can also mean simply making outdoor furniture last longer. With easy steps like proper cleaning and maintenance, it is less necessary to replace furniture as often. The benefits are not only environmentally friendly but wallet friendly as well.
