Perfume - I Smell A Cynical Celebrity Endorsement

Nov 5, 2007
Kelly Brook is the latest celebrity to launch her own perfume. At a cost of 17.95 for a 25ml bottle the 2001 FHM world's sexiest woman will be looking to claim a piece of the celeb perfume industry which sees an annual income in the UK of around 255 million. Celebrity perfumes comprise of over a third of the 638 million income per year of the entire UK perfume industry.

A recent survey has revealed that one in five Brits between the ages of 16 and 24 own a celebrity endorsed perfume. With 30 new celebrity endorsed fragrances endorsed each year the choice for the consumer is overwhelming. This article will help guide you through some of the most popular and bizarre celebrity endorsed perfumes on the market.

Top Three High Street Perfumes:
1 - Katie Price (aka Jordan)
Katie Price has released a perfume named 'Stunning'. It is currently the most popular fragrance on the market. Katie wanted something floral; "Something feminine but still strong". The fragrance has top notes of Mandarin and Bergamot. The base notes are Patchouli, Musk and Vanilla with the heart notes consisting of Strawberry, Violet, Jasmine and Rose. A 30ml spray bottle retails at around 18 pounds.

2 - Kate Moss
Kate by Kate Moss perfume is currently the second most popular in sales for the UK Company Superdrug. The fragrance it sold as, "a mix of elegant and risque." It is meant to represent the two sides of Kate Moss: the good and the bad. This duality is reflected in the scent which incorporates a vintage English feel with smokey rose and black undertones. A 30ml spray bottle retails at around 21 quid.

3 - Christina Aguilera
The third most popular perfume sold by Superdrug is Christina Aguilera's self titled offering. Promoted with the tag line "sometimes it's all you need to wear" it is designed to reflect the singers playful sexiness. It is a fruity fragrance with blackcurrant tea notes and a vanilla base. Top Three Bizarre Celebrity Scents

Jade Goody
Why anyone would want to smell like Jade Goody is a mystery to me. The perfume was released in June 2006 and is said to be "sweet and enduring - just like Jade". It has base notes of sandalwood, Vanilla, Amber Moss and Musk. Bergamot and Cassis citrus notes as well as Cumin, Cinnamon and pink pepper middle notes. Shh... retails for around 25 GBP per 100mls.

Donald Trump
In September 2004 Donald Trump released a fragrance that aimed to be "the best man's fragrance available". The cologne contained mint, cucumber and black basil citrus notes with a core secret ingredient adding to spicy and earthy undertones. The fragrance was on the market for 60 dollars per 3.4 ounce bottle. The press release said of Trump, "People want to know him on every level". I'm not convinced.

Cliff Richard
Cliff Richard has lent his name and image to two perfumes, miss you nights and devil woman. Miss you nights is said to be a warm, floral, oriental scent. Whilst devil woman is said to be heady and sensual and be reminiscent of the early days of rock and roll. Devil woman has a scent dominated by French cassis - a blackcurrant note that is found in wine. Convenient as anyone that wants to smell like Cliff would have to be drunk. 15 pounds per bottle.
