Building Muscle, Is It About Nutrition or Training?

Nov 11, 2007
People, who want to get into a better physical shape, adopt various methods. However, there is always a question as to which is more important in the process of bodybuilding - Nutrition or Training? The answer seems to elude even the most rigorous body builder.

One great bodybuilding trainer used to say that Bodybuilding is nutrition 80%. That was probably his opinion. But what is the reality? Which is more important in bodybuilding - Nutrition or Training?

To come to a conclusion, there are certain facts to be analyzed. The stage of bodybuilding a person is in becomes the important factor in determining the importance of nutrition and training. Otherwise, one simply cannot arbitrarily grant a percentage weight to either of these. For example, when a person has just started to exercise to tone his muscles, he probably has no or very less idea about the right kind of nutrition for a strong body. However, a person who is in an advanced stage of bodybuilding has to focus more on training methodologies and routines.

A novice in bodybuilding and fitness is usually not aware of the kind of nutrition necessary for his own body's better strength. In such a scenario, when he approaches a professional bodybuilding trainer, the advice he would receive is the right kind of diet. An in depth study of his eating habits is undertaken and changes may be suggested to result in fat loss.

The person may be eating full meals 2 - 3 times a day. He might be taking food filled with more fat and less minerals and proteins. When such is the case, no amount of exercising might help him achieve the desired result of fat loss. At this stage, what is much more important is not exercising but change in nutrition intake. He is usually immediately advised to eat 5-6 smaller meals per day and replace his fatty, junk food with more protein and minerals. Sometimes medicines might also be suggested for better calcium or other minerals in the body.

When this kind of importance is given to nutrition at this stage, noticeable and desirable results are seen within a few weeks. There is a highly visible reduction in fat due to the diet changes and nutrition intake. Thus till this point, more focus is clearly on Nutrition.

When a person has regularized his eating habits adequately he needs to focus entirely on his training methods. At this stage, the more exercise done, the better the result. He only needs to maintain his nutritional diet. Further increase or change in eating habits will not provide fat loss beyond a certain point of saturation. But at this juncture, more of training and exercising helps build and tone the muscles better. Therefore here the training becomes all the more important. Different kinds of exercises are tried for effective results.

Thus only time and stages of a person decides what is more important!
