Don't Be Over The Hill, Be On Top Of It

Nov 15, 2007
When they are young everyone believes that life ends at 40...that is until your 39th Birthday and 40 starts to look very imminent! Men are entering their prime, looking distinguished, improving with age so why are we expected to believe that at 40 we are over the hill?

Well, here's the secret, we're not!

We're just getting into our stride, the confusion and stress of our 20's and 30's are gone and it's time to start thinking about yourself again! Half the battle is believing in yourself and seeing yourself as you want the rest of the world to see you. Unfortunately the other half isn't quite so easy...actually looking how you want to look.

It doesn't seem fair somehow that celebrities get to be nipped, tucked and stretched, not to mention having every undesirable inch sucked out, while we worry about children, bills and mortgages.

It's these airbrushed versions of perfection we must compete with every time we leave the house. Somehow these digitally altered images always seem to be everywhere the day you're not wearing makeup, didn't coordinate your outfit and couldn't even find your brush! These are the days were you have to take a deep breath, look to the heavens and remind yourself it's all fake.

Now you've done that, get proactive!!! Stand up, look the world in the eye and say you aren't half the woman you were at 20, you're much more! Don't forget you aren't alone. There are other women going through exactly the same thing and there are people out there whose whole job is to make you look and feel like a million dollars.

Don't be fooled, you don't need to spend a fortune and plastic surgery is just not necessary. Image consultants, hairdressers, nutritionists - they are all there to help.

If you're feeling low and need a boost, why not book a hair appointment or an image consultant appointment? These will all help you look good on the outside, allowing you to feel good on the inside. Next time you go to get your hair cut, don't go with 'the usual', ask a professionals opinion and run with it! And do something out of the ordinary; an image consultant can help you buy clothes in styles and colours that flatter your figure and colouring.

As for makeup there are a few options. Get the image consultant to help you to figure out the colours that will suit you or head to your nearest department store and get a free makeup counter makeover! Admittedly the makeup counter lady (or 16 year old girl as is the tendency now!) may not be the most impartial jury as she will unashamedly plug her company's own products but still, the ideas are there and that's all you need! Once you have figured out what looks good, hit the shops!

This time there is no popping into a shop because the children need something or you forgot something on the weekly shop, it's all about you! Take a friend if you want some help, or a personal shopper if you want to make it all about you! Stop for a snack involving chocolate or doughnuts or something equally forbidden. Feeling beautiful is about spending some time and effort on yourself, and not letting your own needs be drowned out by the chorus of 'I need...', 'I want...' and 'Can you just...' that you hear every day.

What's important not to forget though, is there is only so much anyone else can do. Maybe the first step on everyone's self improvement ladder should be looking in the mirror and reminding themselves that are beautiful, that the improvement is for you, not the rest of the world. The odd wrinkle and grey hair don't make you less beautiful, they make you more beautiful.

As a final thought think of one of the best paid celebrity make-up artists in history, Kevyn Aucoin, whose skilled hands worked on the most beautiful of women, like Audrey Hepburn, Isabella Rossellini, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cindy Crawford, Barbra Streisand and Kate Moss. This man knew beauty at its most intimate and his most remembered quote is 'Perfection is boring. If a face doesn't have mistakes, it's nothing'.
