Make A New Start With Unique Mastectomy Attire

Aug 17, 2007
Undergoing a single or double mastectomy can be one of the most traumatic experiences of a woman's life. The initial diagnosis of breast cancer is bad enough. First there's dealing with the reality and gravity of the situation. Then there's surgery to content with. This will possibly be followed up with chemotherapy and/or radiation. But, what about after the surgery? Can mastectomy attire make a difference?

How a woman will react to a single or double mastectomy will depend largely on the woman herself and the support system she has in place. Losing a breast or both can be very difficult and traumatic. After all, society says women have breasts. For the woman who doesn't, the adjustment can be huge.

Choosing the right clothing after surgery can ease the transition. So too can a support system that steps up and repeatedly shows the woman that she is valued and she is beautiful. Breasts are simply a part of the body; they do not make the woman. The more this message is sent home, the better.

That said, clothing can make a huge difference. It's a simple fact that the better a person looks, the better they feel. For those who undergo mastectomy, however, it's often hard to find clothes that look and feel right. This is where specialized mastectomy clothing can really help.

There are a number of makers of clothing that are specifically designed to help women who have undergone surgery look and feel as though nothing has happened. This is very important for those who are getting frustrated trying to find clothing in regular clothing stores. Imagine the frustration of trying on outfit after outfit and not having them look quite right. This is the mastectomy patients' reality. But, specialized clothing can help.

Clothing makers offer everything from lingerie to designer dresses for women who have had breast cancer and fought back. The clothing can include prosthetic devices to give the illusion of full breasts or it can simply be designed to minimize the appearance of the breasts. The choice is really up to the woman and the styles available are almost endless.

When choosing clothing after surgery, be certain to buy items that are comfortable and make you or the person you're buying for look good. There's no need to buy clothes that are so baggy they look like they came from the back of the closet or worse yet - someone else's! There's also no need to buy items that are uncomfortable for surgical sites. Plus, with the styles and varieties available, a mastectomy friendly wardrobe can be incredibly well rounded.

Cancer surgery is never a small thing. For a woman who has lost a breast or both, the prospect of life after surgery can be daunting. Mastectomy attire can help you or that special woman in your life get back on track while feeling good doing so. The surgery and subsequent treatments hopefully addressed the cancer, now it's time to address the woman inside.
