Buying a Framed or Unframed Panorama

Nov 26, 2007
So you have found a scenic panorama that you have been looking for. The next decision is to how to purchase it. Most sellers of panoramas and photoramics will offer several options.

The most common way to purchase a panorama is complete in a frame. Complete framing will often include a frame, backing, mats and a glass or Plexiglas glazing. Unframed prints are less expensive and some folks prefer not to have the print placed in a frame.

Framed prints are generally more expensive and adding mat boards can add to the cost. Whether you buy your panorama already in a frame, plan to frame it yourself or use a framing service, there are some important things to consider.

If you decide to purchase a panoramic print unframed you still have several options you can exercise. Sometimes the frame offered with the print is not exactly what you want. One option is to work with a local framing shop that can provide you with custom framing services. Many different frame styles are available that can enhance the look of the print. A nice frame can make even a plain print look better. Frames can also be used that will more closely match a specific room decor.

A professional framing service will take the time to explain proper framing techniques that will protect your print from damage, dirt and wrinkling.

Besides providing a way to display your panoramic print, frames and glazing are meant to protect the print from dirt and damage. In order to keep your print in good shape over a long period it is important that only acid free backings and matte materials be used. Paper based materials that are not acid free may expose your print to chemicals that may cause discoloration over time. There are acid free backing materials and mats that will ensure that your panoramic print will last for many years.

Glass glazing has some definite advantages over other materials. A quality glass glazing will not distort the image and is easier to keep clean. Since glass is prone to condensation be sure that the frame allows some ventilation. To keep the print from adhering to the glass, there should always be adequate spacing between the glass and the print.

A quality glass glazing should be your first choice. If you decide to go with some type of plastic glazing, know what the drawbacks are. Some types of clear plastic materials can be less expensive but come with their problems. First off, plastics are less optically acute than glass and can distort your view of the image.

Low quality plastics also have a tendency to warp and bend. If not properly cleaned, some plastics are prone to scratches and even clouding. Never allow the print to remain in direct contact with a plastic glazing. Over time, the print may adhere to the plastic, ruining your print. Whether you buy a framed panorama, have it framed or frame it yourself, be sure to select a high quality plastic material and make sure the glazing is done properly.

If you decide to take the challenge of framing you own panorama, be sure to do your homework. Avoid cheap plastic frames and paper based materials that are not acid free. There are many resources available to help you, including online sources of information and some framing shops and online sellers offer framing kits.

When looking for just the right panorama of photoramic, be sure to buy from a reputable online seller that offers quality and value.
