The First Time You Purchase Carpet

Nov 28, 2007
Moving into your first home means making a lot of important purchases that you never have had to make before and if you want to fix up the home that you are moving into, carpet is probably one of these purchases. There are a few different things that you need to know before you buy carpet the first time that can make the whole process easier.

You should look around at the different places that you can buy carpet and make a decision as to where you want to purchase it from first. You can buy it from one of the large stores like Lowe's or Home Depot, but smaller stores may be able to help you just as much. One thing that you need to realize when you go shopping around for carpet is that if you find one kind that you like, you may not be able to locate it at another store to compare prices simply because of a practice known as "private labeling". This is something stores do specifically to combat comparison shopping and it is the practice of naming a carpet something that it specific to that store, so even if another store has the same carpet, it will not have the same name.

Where you plan on having the carpet installed also makes a difference in what kind of carpet you want to get. The most popular areas for carpet are the living room, den, study, and bedrooms, but you should never put carpet in the bathroom or kitchen for any reason. Hallways are also candidates for carpet, but only carpet that is of good enough quality to last a long time, since this area is heavily trafficked and will become soiled easily.

Look at the density of the carpet. High quality carpet will be dense and not allow you to work your finger down to the mesh backing easily. The individual fibers of the carpet also need to be twisted tightly. This twisting also reflects the quality you're getting.

Take the measurements of the room that you need to have the carpet put in and make sure you bring them to the carpet store with you. Give them to the manager or an older attendant in the front and have them help you calculate how many square feet you will need. Make sure you talk to an older person rather than a younger one, since they will be able to help you more and offer more experience.
