Answers You Need When Buying An Area Rug

Nov 29, 2007
Lots of people like area rugs in their homes and they are able to divide up a space quite nicely, but the fact is that this can be one of the largest purchases for your home that you can make as far as furniture. Depending on where you purchase the rug, what it is made of, where it was made, and etcetera, you could end up spending thousands of dollars on an area rug big enough to fit your living room or den.

Most people are not willing to spend a great deal on something like this, but for those of you with the money to spend, the opportunities are endless. There are, however, a few things you need to think about before you decide to purchase an area rug for your home.

The first thing you need to do is find out what room you want to use the rug in. You want a rug that will not extend itself all the way to the walls of the room, because if you get one like that, you might as well have purchased carpet instead. Framing a rug properly is important to maintain the feel of the room.

Color is also very important. You need to choose a color and a pattern that go well with the room you are using the rug in. A room that has ornate patterns on the wallpaper or upholstery does not need a rug that has an ornate design on it, since the room will appear too busy for the eye. Light rugs will give an area a feeling of space, while darker rugs will make a room feel more cozy and "safe".

You also need to think about what you want the focal point of your room to be. If you want the rug to be the center of attention, then you should choose a rug that has a central medallion or one that has a one-sided pattern on it. Try designing your room around the rug, if this is the case. If you want a fireplace to be the focus, then you want a rug with a more uniform pattern or no pattern at all.

Rugs with intricate patterns can be put in areas of the house that see a lot of traffic, since the activity in the pattern will hide a lot of the dirt and wear that feet trekking across it will create.
