Important Steps In Developing Good Habits In Your Pet

Dec 7, 2007
As your puppy continues to grow bigger, it is always a good idea to start your pet's healthy habits sooner, rather than later! The more you work with your pet and develop daily, weekly, and monthly routines, the benefits to your precious pet's health and happiness are endless!

First on the healthy habits list is grooming. The importance of grooming your pet properly cannot be stressed enough! If you start giving your pet baths early on, though they may not like it, you are helping them get used to being clean. However, make sure you give your dog a bath only when they need it (a good sign is the simple nose test...if they begin to smell, put them in the tub!). Other basic grooming procedures include clipping you pet's nails, cleaning out their ears, and regularly brushing their coat.

Dental care is very important in keeping your pet healthy. It is possible to buy doggie toothbrushes and toothpaste at almost any pet supply store. Such items such as Greenies® Dental Chews and Kong's Dental StickTM are great ways to help keep your doggie's mouth clean and free of plaque, tartar, and gingivitis.

Nutrition is also very important in keeping your pet healthy and happy. If your pet has a poor diet, it will wear on them...signs such as a dull coat, lack of energy, and excess weight are visible cues. Dogs thrive on meat-based diets with grain and vegetable accents. Dogs are built to endure and need food that is high in protein. If you have any questions about what kind of food you should give your dog, or have questions about the quantity of servings and how often you should feed your pet a day, contact your local veterinarian, not the local pet store's sales rep.

Exercise is also incredibly important to the health and over-all well being of your pet. Take your dog on walks twice a day. You may want to build up the pace and distance so you and your dog can both get some exercise. A healthy, fit body makes for a happy pet. And also, if you take your dog on two walks a day, they will have spent a good amount of their energy on the walks and will then have a good night's rest...another healthy benefit!

Administering medication is necessary for the health of your pet. Any medication that has been prescribed by your veterinarian or has been purchased over the counter, such as flea and tick treatments, must be administered regularly to ensure the optimum health and comfort of your pup.

Finally, annual veterinary check-ups are very important to your doggie's well being. Going to the vet once a year is beneficial because it simply helps maintain your pet's good health; even if a disorder or abnormality should develop, if you take your pet to the vet yearly you may be able to catch the issue in time to either remedy the situation or to drastically improve it.

Because your pet's health and happiness are a top priority, make sure you start your pet's healthy habits early on. This will improve your pet's happiness, and may even add on a year or two to their precious lifespan!
