Cigarettes. Why We Shouldn't Do It
What is the number of people have tried it; sneak to the back the school boiler room, the small hidden corner in the garden and other sundry places, for that hush-hush smoke. The hand of this reviewer goes up. I too happened to be a huge enthusiast of the advertisements played on TV and radio. It true, I've lit a Lucky?; I had much to light, flipped a box a-la the advertisements. Do I look in anger for the reason that these are denied me; negative! that was yesterday. Yesterday as far as smoking is concerned, began well, as said by archives in South America. The pictures, decorations and everything else all illustrated the Maya and later, Aztec priest and other dignitaries, in temples, puffing smoke away from the tube.
Invaders from Spain must have thought this to be stylish and the Conquistadores took the idea back into Spain. In Spain, the tobacco was enfolded in maize but much later the paper was brought into the picture. As a matter of fact, the name 'cigarette' is French meaning small cigar. Just as Spanish supposed smoking was hip, the French saw it as tres cool, picked up the belief and in the 1830s took the style home.
It was the Crimean War that changed the traditions of many a British smoker. The Tommy, apparently not flush with cash used to simulate their enemies from Russia and allies from Turkey in smoking tobacco rolled up in newspapers, not being able to obtain or afford cigarette papers. Cigarettes were at war alongside us, right up to the end of the Vietnam conflict. They definitely have progressed. Filters, Cork tips, thin and thick paper to assist burning, thick cigarettes, tiny ones, colour ones, and non-tobacco ones. Currently, Now there is talk of hiding them under the counter.
It does not matter if you are or are not a smoker, there is no denying cigarettes have influenced or became part of us. We've definitely had so much to light.
