Kiddy Decorating Delights: Kids' Rocking Chairs And More!

Dec 9, 2007
Decorating a child's bedroom is not just a matter of painting the walls yellow or putting desks and kids' rocking chairs in place. It requires careful planning and a lot of creative thinking. It's all about children's personalities: their preferred colors, their hobbies and interests, and the activities they want to be involved in. A child's bedroom should be more than just a place for rest and relaxation. It should be a haven to support the growth and development of your kid.

Where to Begin

The wide variety of children's furniture - from miniature vanities and colorful cabinets to enchanting kids' rocking chairs can make this a delightful project for moms and dads. But sometimes it's hard to determine where to begin. Combining personality and functionality can be pretty daunting. But the following ideas may help guide you through the whole process:

Size Matters

Take into account the size of the space you'll be working on. Children's bedrooms are relatively smaller and therefore, more challenging to decorate. Filling it up with the wrong furniture size may not leave the ample space required for your child to engage in recreational activities. Your child will appreciate well-designed, small furniture, such as kiddy display cabinets or kids' rocking chairs.

Use a paint color that will brighten up the room and make it look bigger and cheerful. Yellow, mint green, and sky blue are great choices, but white is a practical option if you plan to decorate overtime or if your child will be growing up in the same room. As children grow into adolescence, they'll want to take control of how their rooms should look like and this includes the color of the room.

A Purpose-driven Room

What purpose will the room serve? If you have a separate room where your child does activities like playing, artwork, dancing, or singing, then basic bedroom furniture including a side table, kiddy shelf, and perhaps one of those kids' rocking chairs will do.

On the other hand, if your child's bedroom serves as an indoor activity area as well, you need to include easy storage solutions such as wicker baskets and cabinets.

Listen to Your Kid

Unless it's what your child insists on, don't conform to the idea that boys' bedrooms should be in blue or green while girls' should be pink or peach. Discuss with your child ideas for colors and themes that will reflect his or her personality. Your little girl could want a room with a sports theme, while your little boy may prefer something Disney-like. You may have been dreaming of creating a fairy tale theme for your child, but don't push it if the idea is not welcomed.

Permanent or Passing?

How long should the decor stay before it gets changed? If your child will keep the room until he or she moves out to college, then best if you opt for wall murals that are inexpensive and can easily be painted over. Today's passion may be Powerpuff Girls, but in two or three years' time, it could change to a rock band. So consider decorating materials that are easy to replace.

Your child's furniture, on the other hand, doesn't have to be of low quality just because they will be eventually replaced. Kids' rocking chairs and play mats need to withstand the hyper-activity that most kids have growing up.

The bottom line to decorating children's bedrooms is for them to have a place that's all theirs at home. Careful planning, lots of creative thinking, and your child's ideas as well as your own will help achieve a cheerful haven that reflects the individuality of your kid.
