Ventilation Tips For Making Your Home Energy Efficient

Dec 12, 2007
It is quite surprising to find out that the average homeowner spends as much as 1500 a year, paying for energy bills. Though many people dismiss this expense as a necessity, they are actually missing out on a lot. You do not necessarily have to spend so extravagantly to make your dwellings comfortable, regardless of what season it may be.

There are so many places to check inside your home if you are looking to make huge cuts out of your energy bill. One place that most people would want to examine would be their ventilation and how air moves in and out and around the house.

First of all, you should understand that air that leaks out of your house can significantly drain the energy used to operate the equipment. Air conditioners and heaters in particular have to churn out more cold or hot air if more and more air makes its way out of the house. This equipment will have to use more energy and you can expect your power bill to grow bigger and bigger.

The fix in this situation is to keep the air inside, by having the house sealed and insulated. You not only keep the hot or cold air inside the house, you also have more control over the heater or air conditioner should things get too hot or cold.

The humidity in a home can be a big factor which affects your health. An environment which is too humid can be the cause of allergies breaking out or lung disease and related problems. You can easily avoid all these inconveniences if you have a good attic ventilation system installed.

If your attic is properly ventilated, then it would be a great help since the circulation that a ventilator promotes would make sure that hot air is expunged from a home during summers, and that moisture would also be kept out during winters as well.

For brick built homes it is also important to use ventilation bricks in appropriate places, a common problem for home owners is having cavity insulation done poorly, the insulation will be applied where the ventilation bricks are preventing moisture escaping and creating damp. Most modern cavity insulation will take this into account and prevent damp whilst improving the insulation quality of the home.

Supplement these ventilators with ceiling fans. These appliances should not be underestimated, as they work wonders with the right placement. First of all, they cost lesser than air-conditioners or heaters to maintain. Second, they can be a great help to moving air around in your home, regardless of how hot or cold it is in the house. If a ceiling fan is rotating counter-clockwise, the resultant air flow would have an effect similar to wind, giving anyone in the house a cooler feel.

There are actually other things in the house that you can modify if you plan on saving money. Checking on ventilation alone can make a big difference. Try improving on what you already have to help change the air flow in your house. You will be surprised how small changes can help you save so much.
