Workplace Safety Shoes And OSHA

In 1970, OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, was passed by the United States Congress. First created by the United States Department of Labor, it was to act as a governing body to certify that job sites were providing adequate protection to their entire employee personnel. It produces the mandatory safety regulations and guidelines that all industries are required to follow in an effort to minimize workplace injuries. OSHA checks up on these businesses to ensure that they are properly following the regulations to minimize employee risk exposures. Shoes are a big section in OSHA's guidelines.

The necessary footwear is required in order to protect feet from workplace accidents. Most individuals do not think about their feet, so OSHA made sure there were guidelines in place to protect feet with proper safety shoes. The safety shoe requirement per industry may change. As well, OSHA's guidelines have evolved with new shoe technologies in place.

For example, many industries involved with the utilization of heavy materials, require steel-toed shoes. For individuals, such as product manufacturers and construction personnel, these shoes can be very beneficial. The shoe's soles are strengthened with steel. This guarantees protection against injuries to the feet.

The only exception to this regulation is those who work with electrical objects, as the steel can actually become a workplace hazard. Instead, the American National Standards Institute has created for them Electrical Hazard Footwear. To decrease the possibility of electrical hazards, these shoes are outfitted with rubber components.

Some industries do not benefit from either of these shoes, and require a different set of work-related shoe regulations. One such industry is commercial kitchens. Kitchen personnel, such as cooks, have a different set of requirements. First, their shoes need to cover the entire tops of their feet. Shoes must be chiefly made of rubber. These are to decrease the possible risks of burning feet if food is to fall to the ground.

OSHA makes these guidelines to benefit the workers and protect them from the onset of a serious injury that could take them out of work. One foot-related accident at the workplace can hinder an individual from working every again. OSHA's guidelines do evolve over time to make room for new footwear technologies.

It is often required by OSHA that the employer should reimburse their employees for the shoes they bought. However, this is not always the case. Fortunately for these workers, because these shoes are seen as a necessary expense that is required for their job performance, they are actually able to deduct the price of the safety shoes from their taxes under the label of a business expense.
