Choosing The Best Area Rug Size

Dec 18, 2007
Now that you have decided to add or change your room's area rugs, congratulations on making that change! Excited? Area rugs need to be periodically changed and buying area rugs would need more than just what one may think if it is fitting for the room or the office. There are several considerations when buying area rugs. If you have learned the benefits for using area rugs: providing comfort, versatility, sound reduction, safety and not to forget beauty, then it would help you to decide what you may need for that particular space in the house or in the office.

The first one you have to determine is the size of your area rug and there's more to consider than just thinking of the dimensions. A particular dimension must suit with the furnitures and the space where it should be placed. A rug's size could create more or lessen the space. So, it is important to pay attention to this particular aspect.

A large size area rug can totally change the look of the entire room. Smaller sizes are use to beautify the floors giving emphasis on a particular area, the fireplace perhaps. The living room must have an area rug which will allow your guests to put their feet on the rug. Imagine how funny it is when the guest seated on the rear end of the sofa is the only guest who could not put his feet on the floor! You must need a larger size then that would accommodate the entire sofa or even a bigger one. Other designers also suggest putting the front legs on the rug while the back legs are off. But it is equally important to maintain balance for the entire area.

Another large size rug is necessary in the dining room to make sure all legs of the chairs are footed on the area rug otherwise you may be thinking of not putting an area rug at all. Think that the legs should not fall off the area rug when your guests pull off the dining chairs or putting those legs almost outside the area rug. As a general rule, the right size should be 4 feet larger than the width and length of the dining table.

If you have a coffee table, the general rule will still apply: all four legs should fall off into the rug so the area rug must be large enough to accommodate the entire furniture. Accentuate the area by leaving a space in the flooring between the furniture and the area rug.

In the bedroom, putting a room-sized rug will only defile the purpose for beauty since most of the rug will only be under the bed. It is advisable to have mini-sized separately positioned rugs near the bedside and before the bed.

Do not forget to take the measurements for your floor dimensions to ensure you have the appropriate size. After setting all the necessary measurements, you can now take a look into what kind of rugs would be perfect as a theme or what design will suitably allow your guests to feel comfortable and at ease.
