Replacing Your Mattress More Frequently Improves Sleep

Dec 23, 2007
It seems so cut and dry when you say it out loud. If I get a new mattress, I will feel much better and want to get a good night's rest. But, it is surprising that, as much as people may agree with this sentiment, few will actually take action in order to help shirk that insomnia.

You sleep in your bed every single night, and during that time, you toss and turn, the kids might jump on the bed, you pile stuff on the mattress from time to time, and you do other such activities in bed. After awhile, the mattress starts to fade, sink and just overall feel really lumpy, which can further add to your restlessness and insomnia.

The experts say that, ideally, you should really replace your mattress every five to seven years. Many people do not do this, because they feel like it is so expensive to do so, and that they haven't gotten all the wear and tear out of their mattress yet, so it is silly to replace it. However, this is not a time to be frugal, especially when your health is at stake. If you have the opportunity to help prevent further bouts of insomnia, and do absolutely nothing, that would be even sillier, now wouldn't it?

There are many stores that offer annual sales on bedding and mattresses, so it would be to your benefit to take advantage of those if you are in fact having trouble sleeping. Besides, the longer you avoid dealing with your sleepless nights, the more money you will be spending in the long run. It would be much more economical to make one bigger purchase on something worthwhile like a new mattress, rather than to continue doling out money for a wide variety of sleeping pills and remedies that will cost a whole lot more.

Find a mattress that really fits your body type, rather than picking out the fluffiest one in the store. Some people do not realize that it is actually better to pick out a firmer mattress to avoid having trouble sleeping throughout the night. This will better support your back, and help to align the body so that you are not out of sorts. Sometimes pillow-top or softer mattresses are better for sleeping, but usually are more appropriate for children and seniors where comfort is everything.

Don't be afraid to throw out that old mattress, especially when that is what is keeping you up at night all the time. If your bed does not provide a welcoming and enveloping type of atmosphere, then you can count on lying there trying to find a comfortable spot, which will of course lead to sleep deprivation. Spend the money now, and be done with your sleepless nights. Get ready to pull back the sheets, climb into bed, and just relax the whole night through. It is the least you can do for yourself to ensure a sound night free of uncomfortable interruptions.
