Who Else Wants to Get Off the Insomnia Spinning Wheel

Dec 23, 2007
It's getting kind of old, isn't it? You walk into your room in the middle of the night, lie down on your semi-disheveled bed; you toss and turn over and over; stare at the ceiling; get out of bed; get back into bed; get out again and go to the kitchen, then the living room; then lie down again, and get angry. Your insomnia is like the movie Groundhog Day, only it is not a comedy. There is nothing funny about the fact that, night after night, you are more and more restless and agitated. You are not getting sleep and you finally get fed up enough to do something about it.

Insomnia is definitely one rut you do not want to find yourself in. The longer you go without proper rest, the less healthy and happy you will be. Your mood is going to change, because you will become more frustrated with not being able to be comfortable enough to sleep for eight hours. You might find yourself constantly snapping at your close friends or family because your lack of sleep has completely drained you. You start to forget important details and lose your train of thought in conversation or while undergoing tasks. Your mind is not at its peak performance because you need to sleep in order to recharge your body and your brain.

The best thing to do initially in order to get out of this maze of restlessness is to take your sleeping disorder by surprise. There is nothing that can combat a sleepless night faster than getting on a healthy track toward a more sound sleeping pattern. If you are a person that loves to stay up until all hours of the night, the best plan of attack would be to go to bed at a decent hour so you can start the day off right.

The next thing to consider is to cut out the naps. Your body secretly does not want a nap because it is like a mean trick. Just as you settle in, get relaxed and are ready to drift off into a deep sleep, the alarm goes off or you jolt out of bed, realizing that you have to get up after only ten minutes. This is very jarring to the mind and body, and will not make your insomnia go away. In fact, it will worsen it.

And lastly, you have to stop worrying; otherwise, your mind will continue to race, which will never calm down, and thus never signal to the rest of the nervous system to shut down for the night. Do not allow the insomnia to capitalize on this constant state of alertness that your body and mind are always in. Change things up by clearing your head of all the negativity, writing things down, meditating, or whatever you need to do to feel more relaxed. You will be able to get a better night's sleep the less that is plaguing your mind. So get off of that wheel, and onto a nice pleasure cruise toward Slumberland.
