The Father's Role In Parenting Should Never Be Underestimated

Dec 25, 2007
It's been said that although anyone can be a father it takes someone special to be a dad. While the father's role in parenting seems to be growing smaller other duties continue to take over what little time is available in this fast paced lifestyle that we seem to be leading anymore. As the role of fatherhood evolves and things in the world around us change there is one constant; fathers always have played, and continue to play an important role in the lives of their children.

There are basically 5 ways that the father's role in parenting helpls the whole family (whether they are with the children's mother or not).

1. Having respect for the mother. The mother of your child deserves to be respected if you are with her or not. When you show your children that you have respect for their mother they are learning to have respect for others. If both parents are respectful to each other their children will feel more secure. When your child sees that you have respect for each other they will feel more accepted and deserving of respect themselves.

2. Spend time with your children and your family. If you are with the children's mother, spend time with her individually and spend time with the children. It is important that your children witness you and your wife cultivating a strong marriage. They also need to see you spending time with your family. Children learn what they live and if they live in a home that is disconnected and distant, they will grow up that way. On the other hand, if they grow up in a family that does things together and a father who spends time with them, they will grow up with a stronger sense of security.

3. Be a strong role model. As a father you should live your life as you would want your children to live theirs. Teaching children to, do is I say not as I do rarely ever works. You should emulate the type of person that you want them to become. If you do not want your children to go bar hopping and to become addicts then you need to show them by example. When children see their parents making mistakes they dont learn to not make those mistakes; what they learn is its acceptable behavior. Instead of losing your childrens respect and having them they give you is being hypocritical you really should follow your own advice and live the role of the type of person that you want your children to become.

4. Be a teacher for your children. Being a teacher is more than working for a school. The job of teaching your children is not someone elses. As a father it is your responsibility to see to it that your children are properly educated. This means more than just reading writing and arithmetic. What you will teach your children is much more important than that. You need to teach your children life lessons including love, respect, how to make choices and had a no wrong from right.

5. Lead your family by being the head of the home. The most important part of being a father and definitely most important father's role in parenting is being the head of the household. This is a responsibility that you cannot take lightly. The leader of the family leads his family by example and takes charge in all situations. Having a strong leader allows your family to feel secure and safe.

Being a strong leader does not mean being a dictator. Being a strong leader does not mean being bossy. Being a strong leader does not mean being abusive. By being a strong leader you gently but firmly leach your family, you set a good example for your family to follow, you teach your family and you learn from your family. A good leader never undervalues those that he is in charge of.

It is important not to undervalue the father's role in parenting. With firmness and discipline the father works with the mother nurturing to help his family to become self confident as they grow and lead productive lives.
