Preparing For Christmas The Modern Old Fashioned Way

Dec 27, 2007
Many women with outrageously busy lives have created a special place to retreat to. Often it is only for ten minutes but no travel time is required. It is simply a place you think up. If you loved horses you might visualize a warm pasture with wildflowers softly moving in the breeze. A small herd would be grazing as you stood at the fence watching and relaxing. You might imagine walking your dog through a park just enjoying the fresh air. You might also choose to visualize yourself lying on a mattress getting a long night's sleep for a change.

As the frenzy of the Christmas season approaches you may need this imaginary, peaceful place more than ever. For the working woman especially - there is simply not enough time to do everything. Arrive home after picking up one or two kids. Fix dinner. Supervise homework. Make sure there is a matching outfit for the youngest to wear to school the next morning. Keep an eye on the computer screen to make sure no perverts are stalking your teen-age daughter. Or it could be your son I suppose. Oh - say a few pleasant sentences to your husband in addition to "Please take out the trash."

Before falling into bed in a stupor, see if you have something ready to wear for the next morning. I guess Christmas planning is not numero uno on your list of things to do. You really deserve to enjoy the holiday with your family as much as possible. There are some things you can do in the traditional way. Make that the modern traditional way. Convenient short cuts are a wonderful thing.

Plan the meal. Special roast instead of a turkey. A roast-in bag that cooks the veggies along with the meat. So what if it is really beef stew in disguise. Call it the sirloin tip roast or something that sounds more elaborate. Serve ready-made side dishes like cranberry sauce from a can. A quick jello can be made easily with perhaps a special fruit and marshmallows in it. There is nothing like your home-made favorite pumpkin pie with real whipped cream for dessert. Take the time to do that one special thing the old-fashioned way if that is the family favorite.

Decorating cookies is fun for the kids and you too. Buy slice and bake sugar cookies and all the traditional frostings for decorating them. Who cares if Betty Crocker did the preparation work and they come in a plastic tube. Little kids will still enjoy creating their own rendition of Santa, etc. You can even roll out the dough and cut holiday shapes out of it. (Does anyone out there still own a rolling pin, lol)

Don't skip the fun things like shopping for a tree, visiting Santa at the mall and giving the kids money to donate to put in the Salvation Army kettles. Maybe let them choose a nice toy to donate to some anonymous child. It is a great lesson in caring and simply a nice thing to do. Decorate the tree together. You don't have to string popcorn on it to make it fun. Try to do some things the same way you did them last year. And if your home isn't spotless you don't have to concern yourself with getting crumbs on the carpet and mud on the floor. You want your house clean enough to be sanitary of course but a little clutter makes it a home.
