Your Introduction To The Global Warming Debate

Dec 27, 2007
It's on the TV. It's on the radio. It's on the Internet. It's on newspapers and magazines. You've heard, seen or read the words "global warming" and witnessed plenty of "people who know" getting emotional and agitated in their discussions. What is it? Some new buzz words that the media made up to fill air time or print space? Is global warming something to be worried about or just good ol' media hype? Why do they call it the "debate" about global warming?

Anybody who knows (or doesn't know), scientists and people like you and me, explain global warming as the process of Planet Earth's temperatures running amuck, rising at rates that threaten with alarming possibilities. Our world is getting hotter. And who or what do we blame? Greenhouse gases appear to be the cause behind global warming, and these are the byproduct of thoughtless industries generating pollution without regard for consequences.

Slight temperature rises may not appear to be cause for worry, but the implication is that these temperature rises are unbound. That they will continue to grow over a short period of time with nothing to stop them and thus wreak havoc with the world as we know it. Temperatures up: hotter temperatures on the ground. Temperatures up: the melting of large ice masses. Melting of the ice masses: flooding all over the world. Flooding all over the world: coastline towns, villages and cities underwater, with millions upon millions displaced or dead as a result of such catastrophes. Picture if you will, huge portions of California, Florida, Texas, New York, England and many many other countries going underwater. Those are the threats that global warming brings to the discussion table.

Are we already suffering from global warming? Many believe we are, citing the growing unpredictability of weather conditions and higher temperatures recorded worldwide. Many believe we aren't, attributing these changes to other known or unknown factors-- and often failing to provide scientific evidence to support toheir disclaims. The stakes are high. Our children and grandchildren risk being devastated by the decisions we make today.

Scientists, pseudo-scientists, politicians and celebrities dominate the global warming debate. It's not hard to find someone whose opinions we've come to respect and trust point-blank denying that there is such a thing as global warming. Often, opponents of the global warming theory claim that curtailing greenhouse gas emissions can have a disastrous effect on our economy, with the fallout being far worse than any horrors that global warming could provide. As you can well imagine, both sides of the debate rely on rock-solid and undeniable proof to substantiate their claims.

Those who believe in global warming as a serious threat to our future will often appeal your responsible side, asking you to think about the future welfare of your children and grandchildren. Those who oppose global warming will often present you with pseudo-scientist to back up their claims. Unfortunately, more often than not, they will attack the credibility of global warming proponents without offering rhyme or reason. Behold the two major tactics in the global warming debate!

People are not the only ones who will suffer from global warming effects. Large amounts of toxins in our waters and coral reefs threaten many species who rely on coral reefs and the stability and organic purity of our waters as their natural habitats and sources of food. Wildlife (polar bears, for example) will also suffer. Interested?

Will you allow yourself to stand on the sidelines for global warming. Let's hope not. Read the newspapers, watch the media coverage, search the Internet! Take the time to learn everything you can about an issue that affects the fate of our children and grandchildren.
