The Advantages of Starting a Home Business Franchise

Dec 27, 2007
Have you been toying with the idea of starting a home business, but feel as though you lack the experience or know-how to start from scratch? Don't abandon your dreams! Start a home business by buying into a franchise. It allows you to run your own successful business, while receiving support in those areas where you need help.

There are actually a number of advantages to buying into a franchise. One major benefit is that much of the marketing has already been done for you. Rather than making a name for your home business on your own, many franchises have already developed a reputation in their particular markets. You will simply be able to ride on the backs of those who have gone before you. That's not to say that you won't have to worry about breaking into your market. After all, you'll still need to advertise locally and build up a network of satisfied customers. Choose a franchise that already has a name in its market. You'll already be ahead of business owners starting from scratch.

Another benefit of operating a home business franchise is that much of the advertising is done for you. Many franchises use part of the fees and royalties toward advertising costs. Of course, every company is different. Before you buy in be sure you know exactly how much advertising is going to be done on your behalf by the parent company. You'll likely still want to do some local advertising of your own. Many parent companies will advertise on your behalf on a much broader scale; reaching more consumers than you would be able to on your own.

When you start a home business franchise, you are provided with many of the materials required to run your business through franchise fees. This may include signs, office supplies, fixtures, stationary/letterhead and business cards. Licensing rights to distribute certain brands of products may also be included in your fees. You are spared the necessity to come up with a business concept and logo design on your own. This work has already been done for you.

This is not to say that you don't have any input into how your business is run. While it's true that you may only have limited discretion when it comes to certain business decisions, franchisees typically get to vote as equal members when it comes to big company decisions and major changes in operating procedure. Add to that the support that you have from other owners as well as business mentoring from your parent company. There is a lot of appeal to the idea of starting a home business franchise.

Fortunately there are literally hundreds of businesses from which to choose. When deciding which one to buy into, consider things such as: how much control will I have over my business? What are my franchise fees going toward? What types of business decisions will be put to a vote and what ones will be made by the parent company alone? Does the parent company have a good reputation in its market? How much business and technical support will I be receiving from the parent company?

It's important for you to do some careful research first and make sure that you understand exactly what your role as an individual owner will be in relation to the parent company. When you do, you'll likely be able to find a home business option that is not only workable, but stands an excellent chance of being successful too.
