Bodybuilder Photos The Easy Way

Dec 29, 2007
Professional photographers love to shoot bodybuilders. And bodybuilders love to get a portfolio, not necessarily for vanity, but because photos can be excellent tools for tracking progress and assessing exercise results.

Many trainers take bodybuilder photos to see if a diet or weight-training program is really working. By comparing photos, the trainer and athlete are able to see if there has been any progression, or where problem areas may lie.

It's not hard to take professional quality bodybuilder photos; just follow these tips from the pros:

How to Prepare

The key element of a good photo is capturing muscle and nothing else.

* Shave most body hair before the shoot, or remove it with waxing or some other preferred method. Doing so gives the body a sleeker appearance.

* Do not eat before a shooting, since the stomach tends to protrude after eating a meal.

* Just before the shoot, do a quick, intense workout to get the blood and muscles pumped up.

* Highlight muscle curves and sinew with baby or cooking oil. A thin application of oil over the arms, legs and torso will give the body a polished look.

Be a Poser

Bodybuilding photos are meant to show the athlete at his or her very best, so the choice of pose is extremely important.

* Suck in the stomach by deeply inhaling.

* Keep the spine straight or curved slightly back while standing to show a trim look.

* Tense the muscles in the arms, legs, chest, and stomach.

* Encourage the athlete to do all of these simultaneously, and to hold a smile. The result will be a more natural, even graceful photograph.

Digital Camera

If you have time and skills to do editing, start with a digital camera.

* Use your computer to edit the photos to improve the lighting effects, such as the contrast between muscle groups.

* Removing red-eye is also easy with digital cameras and computer editing software, and any other lighting errors can be fixed.

* A solid tripod will give you one less thing to worry about, and reduce the risk of blurry bodybuilding photos.

Light the Subject

* Creating contrast and shadow on the muscles will result in far superior photos.

* Top lights shining down will display shadows on the bottom of muscles.

* Lights from below will tend to highlight the lower abs, and slim down the chest muscles.

* Avoid using a flash for bodybuilding photos, as this can ruin the natural lighting contrasts.

For progress analysis, competitions or simply to flaunt those muscles, a great bodybuilder photo makes all the difference. Follow these basic rules for intelligent and interesting results.
