The Back To School Battle

Jan 1, 2008
Getting kids ready to go back to school can seem complicated, to say the least. Prying your little ones away from the television screens during those hot summer months to go sit in a classroom and watch "educational" videos all day long may seem like a chore to most parents, but with proper planning and some incentive-based prodding, you can have your children ready to go back to school with an eagerness to learn.

The First Day

The first day is usually the most difficult. Most teachers will kick off the first day by introducing themselves and talking a little bit about the events of the upcoming year. This will give your child an opportunity to brace him or herself as to the upcoming events and to get a good idea as to his or her teacher. Learning more about the teacher is a great way to get things started. If your child suffers from nerves, check into meeting the teacher before the first day of school to get a special introduction that will ease your child's mind.

The first day usually also includes a list of rules. This will teach your child, hopefully, how to behave in the class and, likely more importantly, how not to behave in the class. This is the part of the day where your child will learn if laser pointer pens are okay and what not to do with gum when it's been chewed. These are important educational aspects.

Getting Primed

Getting your kids primed and ready for their first day of school involves careful planning. If your kids are used to a later bedtime during the summer, you may want to begin adapting that bedtime earlier and earlier as the summer draws to a close so it won't be a sudden shock to the system to put your kids to bed at 8:00 pm when they were used to staying up until 8:00 am.

Getting enough sleep is a key component of the back to school battle, but so is eating the right foods. Make sure your kids have a great breakfast and are eating solid, balanced meals throughout the day. Packing a healthy lunch is important.

You also want to give your kids the right motivation to go to school. Tell them to always try their best and to pay attention to the rules and regulations of the classroom. Have your children tell you what they learned on their first day and go over the "rules of the road" with your children so that you can be sure they understand what is being said by the teacher.

School Can Be Fun!

Finally, remind your kids that they can have a lot of fun at school. Meeting new friends, having fun doing assignments, and getting along with the teacher can all be fun. Tell your kids that it's okay to laugh and have a good time during school, as many kids take school far too seriously and have far too much pressure put on them to work hard. Instead, find a healthy balance for your child and teach them positivity first. This will make the back to school battle easier to win for you and, more importantly, for your kids.
