Achieving The Best Year Without Setting New Year's Resolutions!

Jan 4, 2008
A while back the Learning Annex asked me to teach another class on how to overcome procrastination. I remember thinking it weird that anyone who procrastinated would sign up for a procrastination class. Wouldn't they just procrastinate signing up?

If you've ever studied goal setting or the setting of New Year's resolutions, you undoubtedly must have heard that the average New Year's Resolution is out the door after the first 3 weeks into the New Year. Why is this?

The reasons fro delaying goals, forgetting about them, changing them and so on are endless. One of the main reasons, however, is as follows: People have a tendency to put way too many goals on their plate, most people also are trying to accomplish these goals without any constructive and productive support. We are our worst critics and get down on ourselves at the slightest sign of failure. And then we have those closest to us who rub in our faces: "I told you so."

So what's a more achievable solution?

The first thing to do is to listen to your Higher Self. This is not a joke. We are all different about how we react towards setting goals. To Jane Doe a test is a nightmare come true and to Joe Blow a test is his greatest motivator. A deadline to one person may cause him undue hardship, stress and sleepless nights, whereas to me the tighter the deadline and the more complicated the task, the more revved up I get to achieving my deadline early.

Let's look at the infamous New Year's resolution to losing weight. It never fails that we are inundated with yet one more diet plan at the beginning of each New Year. To make losing weight a New Year's resolution in my opinion is stupid. Not only is it cruel and harsh on the body, it is especially unrealistic, overwhelming and an attempt to look into an attempt to put yourself into a strip down prison. One we're meant to break out of after the first 3 weeks in January.

So instead of sending yourself to prison on the first of each year, try this instead: Your one and only goal is to always feel amazingly great and fit.

Think about this, if you have one goal in mind and that is to feel great and fit, you have just stripped your scale of its rights. On the other hand, if you make it your goals to lose x-number of pounds then your scale becomes your say-all, your ruler, your king, your measuring stick, your boss. Instead let's keep in mind that our bodies care for only the following; bodies want to feel cared for, fed with real food, satisfaction is a must, loved, caressed, hugged, paid attention to and used for what it was intended to (to move you around).

Are you getting it?

Order your body to take care of the weight loss part automatically. It was first created to work for you at its optimal capacity. The only thing you have to do is to pay attention to it, to listen to it, to love it and not to treat it right. Once your body feels that you are cooperating by showing it respect, it has no choice but to give you the same in return by bringing out the most gorgeous king or queen that you are already.

Make only ONE New Year's Resolution this year and let it be the following: Love and respect yourself, listen to your Higher Being's wisdom instead of other people and obey it with gladness and joy in your heart. Always believe that you are truly divinely protected and so is everyone else. The doors you are meant to walk through in 2008 are those that open the easiest.

If you can make this ONE New Year's Resolution and stick to it each and every day, you will come to the end of 2008 and be amazed, surprised, and ecstatic at how easy things fell in place for you this year. Almost as if by magic...

Wishing you a phenomenal year!
