How Families Of Special Needs Find Time To Get Everything Done

Jan 4, 2008
Having to juggle your schedule to fit in all of the things you have to do and still coming up short is something that many families of special needs children are up against. Most families that have special needs children have to spend time either doing therapy programs with one child or giving extra time with homework or even extra time to work on behavior and social skills. This time is taken from an already busy schedule and when there are other children in the family it is hard to pick and choose what you are going to get done, especially when the list of things you have left to do are all important.

The impossibility of doing everything at all times is something that families of a special needs child have to deal with one way or another. The stress that this causes is felt by the whole family. Often this can be alleviated by bringing in someone to help out.

Ways Others Can Help

Having someone come in and working with the special needs child is a big help. If a child has a therapy that needs to be done daily whether it is speech, occupational or physical therapy having someone come in and work with the child can be a big help. You can even have your helpers go to therapy appointments with you and your child to learn how to best help.

Giving your children help with their homework sessions and having a back up for times that you need to put a bit more one-on-one with your children are just a few ways this help can be utilized. If you have a helper taking their time with your childs homework sessions after school that frees up your time so you can concentrate on more important details.

Families of special needs children often have problems of children feeling left out as time is spent on the child with special needs. These feelings of neglect can cause self-esteem issues and before this gets out of control you might want to have special help in the way of a volunteer big sister or brother for your other children. This can give your children the emotional support they need and help your family to remain strong through the bumps you may have to go over while juggling your schedule.

Keeping up with everything can wear you down and the stress can get to you quickly. Having someone come in to help out with daily chores or cooking can be more helpful than you might imagine. The extra time it takes to prepare a home cooked meal is something you might not feel that you can spend, having someone come in and do this service for families of special needs children can help keep things running smooth.

Finding the Help You Need

Hiring someone to come in and help around your house can be quite costly. Using volunteers or finding inexpensive labor is a great way to get around this.

Approaching local non-profit organizations, including any clubs or religious organizations you may be affiliated with, to see if they have anyone who is willing to volunteer time is a great place to start when you are looking for help. It is quite possible that there are volunteers looking for a way to give back to the community. It is also possible that family friends are in this group and have wanted to give your family some help but didnt know how to approach you.

If getting a volunteer isnt working out or isnt for you then you can hire help as well. Hiring a professional cleaning service can give you some time but can be expensive. Another way that families of special needs children can deal with this is to hire a teenager to come in and help out. Going to a local high school to leave an ad in the counseling center can help you find a responsible teen. You can also try talking with the child development teacher to see if there is a student or several students that might want to help out. It is possible that the class might give students extra credit to help out and this might keep your costs down as well.

When you find someone to fill the position it is important to interview them and make sure you feel safe and that your children are comfortable. You dont have to take the first applicant that comes along. Once you find one you can take a few days to get to know them and then let them take over specific tasks giving you the time you need to do other tasks. This is one way that families of special needs children can get all of the daily tasks done and insure that the special needs child is able to reach their potential.

There are several ways for families of special needs children to find help and set their schedules so that they can get everything done. Every parent wants to do all they can to help their children be the best they can. Special needs children can be a bit more time consuming and getting a little extra help can be the best thing for your family.
