The Manly Side Of Homemade Soap - What Most Guys Won't Say

Jan 4, 2008
Several years ago, I found a Christmas gift in my mailbox. It was homemade soap. Being a man, this type of gift was not exactly one that particularly interested me, to say the least. To tell you the truth, socks seemed like a much more exciting gift at the time, not to say that I did not appreciate the generosity.

Surprise, Surprise!

So I predictably gave the soap to my wife. Eventually, one day in the shower, I tried the soap myself and I was totally amazed! The soap actually smelled great, and was really lathery. Not to mention, my skin felt great!

Like a Normal Man When Grooming

Don't get me wrong, I am no slob, but normally, I do not go overboard in looking for skin care products. Hey, I am a man. I use manly deodorant, Irish Spring, cheap shampoo, a razor & shaving cream, and a plastic comb. That is about as far as it goes for me. I want a simple grooming process so I can get out the door quickly.

Considering Soapmaking? For Real?

homemade soap is great! In fact, I loved homemade soap so much that I am planning on trying my hand at soapmaking. Even though women generally make soap, I think it would be fun to try my hand at this craft.

Time to make soap is tight, but I believe that after reviewing the homemade soap recipes online that I could definitely make soap from scratch. It doesn't appear to be overly difficult, but with a little practice, I believe I can definitely learn how.

Soapmaking ingredients are simple. From what I have seen in soap recipes, it takes primarily two main ingredients, a strong base (lye) added to some sort of fat.

The main problem most people have in soapmaking is either the proper ratio (of fat to base) or the way they carry out the process. From what I understand, soapmaking is not only very scientific, but also an art, and experience can make a world of difference.

Anything else in homemade soaps is a matter of preference. People have their own tastes in homemade soaps because all of them are not the same. They differ in fragrance, texture, hardness, clarity, color, and shape. There are more types of soap than you could imagine.

The Different Things People Like About Homemade Soap

The scent of the soap is an important aspect in choosing homemade soaps. Different fragrances appeal to different types of people. One smell I do particularly enjoy in soap is the orange fragrance. It just seems to refresh my senses, and gets the day off on the right note.

Texture in soap is also very important to people. Soaps can be too abrasive or too oily according to how they are made and the additives to the soap mixture. The primary ingredient in soap that determines the hardness of the soap is the fats that are used. The more saturated the fats the harder the soap. Saturated fatty acids (like in butter) give a more hard, wax-like texture to the soap, while the more unsaturated fats (such as canola, olive, sunflower oils, etc.) tend to produce a softer, more crumbly soap.

For the life of me, I don't know why I want to try out soapmaking. Maybe it's because since I was a kid, I loved to make chemical reactions and always wanted a chemistry set. Then again, maybe it is just because I want to create something out of thin air that most people depend on a store to supply. Nevertheless, it is the gift of homemade soap that opened possibilities and sparked my interest.
