Basic Tips For Caring Your Bonsai Plants

Jan 5, 2008
Who will not be touched by the finely cultivated bonsai plants? Unlike other kind of works of art, they have a life and require very good care from their owners. In this writing, I am about to show you some good tips to care for your bonsai plants.

* Know Your Plant and Environment

Virtually any type of trees can be made into bonsai plants. The specific species of your bonsai plants will determine the way they need to be grown and cared for. If your bonsai is made from a tropical tree and you happen to live in a cold area, you really need to give very special care to that plant.

It may be easier for you if you pick a tree that grows well in the kind of temperature and environment in where you live. Like regular-sized trees, bonsai plants will adjust to the changes of the season in your area. Take note of the specific tree species that you pick. They may have even more specific needs according to their species.

* Water Your Bonsai Properly

Bonsai plants' water requirements varies dependent on its species, the type of soil and the season. When there is a change in condition, the watering frequency needs to be changed. It is always good to have different watering plans for the different kinds of bonsai you grow.

As a general rule, bonsai plants should neither be over watered nor under watered. Check the top of the soil with your fingers and nails. Moist top soil would mean it still contains some water. Dry soil is a definite sign that you have to start watering.

Most bonsai owners water their plance every day in summer but only do so every other day in winter. This does not apply to all bonsai plants. If your bonsai is made from a very special species or if the soil condition in your area is a bit unusal, you must have a different watering plan for your plant.

* Grow Your Bonsai Outside

Bonsai does look more like an art than a plant, and some people tend to keep them indoor for appreciation. But, in reality, bonsai plants will only stay healthy with sufficient sunlight and therefore should always be grown outdoor. One exception to this rule is where you have a tropical bonsai but live in a cold area, in which case special indoor protection should be devised for your plant.

Usually, bonsai plants that are native to its place can always do well outside even in winter days. However, protection is needed in extremely harsh weather.

These are only basic beginner tips for would-be bonsai enthusiasts. If you are really intent on growing bonsai plants, you should seriously consider studying more in depth details about bonsai care. Important issues that need to be covered include pruning, wiring, re-potting, etc.
