Yahoo Search Marketing (ysm) Reviewed

Since Yahoo gets over 2 billion searches per month it can be an extremely effective marketing tool. Their new geo-targeting feature needs improvement. I'm not as happy with it as I'd like to be. It uses what Yahoo calls DMA zones. Although it some cases it can be very effective, clients that get customers from a smaller geographical area than the DMA purchase too much wasted traffic. Hopefully they'll fix this.

For those of you who don't know, YSM (Yahoo Search Marketing) is the pay per click service provided by Yahoo. It used to be Overture. There is a search network and a content network. Advertising in the search network is easy. You choose the keywords for the products and/or services you sell. You write the text ads to promote your products and services. You decide the maximun amount you want to pay each time your ad is clicked.

When a searcher types one of your keywords in the Yahoo search box you ad appears. Your quality index score determines the position your ad is displayed in the search results. The quality index is made up of your bid price and ad click-through rate. You're only charged when your ad is clicked on.

With over 2 billion searches per month on Yahoo it can be an extremely powerful advertising tool. Their new geo-targeting feature leaves a little to be desired . It's not as functional as it could be. Yahoo uses what it calls DMA zones. Although effective it some cases, it forces some smaller clients to purchase too much wasted traffic. In my opinion the DMA zones are too wide. Hopefully they'll fix this soon.

Yahoo Search Marketing analytics has greatly improved. You can now view real-time reports detailing the number of clicks you're getting so you always know how well your ads are performing.
