Making A Flood Insurance Claim- Fast Action, Fast Results

Jan 5, 2008
Floods occur when they are least expected. This is something beyond the control of your or your insurance provider, and it is why it is so important to have flood insurance. The sole purpose of buying a policy and paying regular premiums is so you have the coverage you need when you need it.

First of all, make sure you have the emergency help lines of your insurance provider always handy. These numbers will be able to give you access to them in case of trouble. Keep this number in a safe and convenient place. Do not wait for something to happen before you realize that the emergency numbers are somewhere among your things floating in waist deep water inside your home.

If you happen to fall victim to a flood, you must act fast. Always call your insurer immediately, but make sure you act rationally, too. Take reasonable measures to prevent damage from worsening, and salvage items not yet destroyed. It is crucial that you become familiar with your plan before a flood occurs so that you can act accordingly should the worst ever happen.

If an emergency arises, you should call your provider as soon as you are first able to and inform them of the situation. You can ask for a claim form so that you can send in estimates for repair and replacement of damaged property and belongings.

In many cases of floods where you are not able to calculate the estimate of the damages, you should be prompt in calling up the insurance provider and ask them to process you claim and also inform them that your estimate will be following once you assess the damages.

There are three things that happen when your insurance provider receive your flood insurance claim. They might just pay you right away or send a claim assessor to assess the extent of damages to your property. He will be responsible for deciding how much of your claim should be paid. If these two are not possible they will send one of their experts who will guide you about the possible repairs and replacement of your damages that are covered under the insurance.

Never throw flood damaged items away before your claim is fully completed. These items are used as evidence, no matter how damaged they may be. You should also keep on hand and in a safe place all other evidence of your belongings, such as receipts, warranties, and other pertaining documents. Having these things makes processing your claim much easier and faster.

This makes it a need to go through the insurance policy that you have taken and the contents that are covered under the policy. Whether it is building structures, furniture or other parts of your home, you should know all of that. If you know your insurance policy well it will help you to make your insurance policy claims so easy.
