How To Overcome Bad Health, Depression And Loneliness - Part 1

Jan 5, 2008
The Holiday rush is over and the world here in the Bay Area is becoming "normal" again slowly but surely. At least that's what it looks like from overlooking the freeway stop-and-go traffic at 6:15 a.m. this morning. I was heading off to work in what seemed like the middle of the night; I volunteer as a suicide prevention hotline counselor and life for our callers continues to be anything but normal. In fact, the holiday let-down increases and magnifies people's pain more than any other time during the year. This is a great time for most people to remain in a hibernating state, to spend time indoors and to reflect on the inside world.

Callers are plagued by severe depressions usually ranging from loss of a marriage, lack of health or declining health, financial trouble and so on. There is one common thread amongst our callers: the overwhelming and overshadowing feeling of loneliness. No one seems to care. No one seems to understand. No one can relate. There is no one to call. No one calls them. Add to that mix declining health with a grim hope for improvement and possibly a spouse or partner who is now seeing someone else and we are dealing with a recipe for disaster.

I was at this very place, feeling devastated about having to wait to die of lymphoma and having to put my life in order by writing a Last Will. I felt stuck in a 15 year marriage that seemed like a true prison to me, one that was unhealthy for both of us. Yet neither of us saw or believed that we had a way out of this misery. My promise "Until death do us part" seemed to be fulfilled in just a little while, and for that I was proud.

There was a sense of unfairness and I was mad at this thing we call "fate" which seemed to have robbed me of my happiness, my marriage, which gave me bad health and now my days were numbered. I had arrived at the bottom of the sea and was about to lose my life and there was nothing else I felt I could lose.

"Did I miss something?" I asked myself. And like a flash I realized that I did miss the most important thing of all: my purpose, the very reasons for me to have chosen to be here. I didn't know what exactly I was here to do, I just felt there was a sense of having missed something. I trusted that in due time this "something" would be shown to me. For now, all I needed to know was that end of my life had not come yet.

A new desire emerged, a desire to find out, to give it my all.

A slow journey to recovery began. Today I live an amazing life that is filled with happiness and love and I am so glad to be able to share with you how I got off my death bed and reclaimed a life that I never dreamed of living.

Look for part two of this article where I will tell you how I not only changed my life around to be the amazing life that it is today, I will show you how it got starting using only my mind.
