The Lemonade Diet - To Do Or Not To Do?

Jan 8, 2008
The Lemonade diet was first introduced in the 1940s. There is still a lot of debate about whether or not it is a healthful diet. For some folks, it is a bi-annual custom that wouldn't miss, vital for their health and stamina. For others, it is the devil's diet and not to be messed with.

First, let's look at the Lemonade Diet and what it is and is not. Although originally called the Master Cleanse, people who liked it nicknamed it the Lemonade Diet. It started out as an affectionate name and it stuck. The Lemonade Diet was first written as a bowel cleanse and de-tox for the body and later became known as a diet to become thinner. Stanley Burroughs, the writer who invented the Lemonade Diet said ''it is a reducing diet which is superior in every way, to other systems because it dissolves and eliminates all types of fatty tissue.''

It is easy to see why people lose weight, when they eat no solids at all for 10 days. Doctors don't even agree about this diet, some feel it is dangerous, others feel it is a healthy thing to fast. Are you confused yet?

Nutritionally, this is what the diet offers;

* One of the best sources of vitamins and minerals readily available, is lemons. Lemon juice "cuts" through fat and mucus, cleaning as it goes.

* Grade B maple syrup is highly recommended for its taste and mineral content. It must not be substituted. The variety of vitamins and minerals in maple syrup include: potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, copper, phosphorus, sulfur, chlorine and silicon. Vitamin A, B1, B2, B6, C, nicotinic acid and pantothenic acid.

* Cayenne Pepper breaks up mucus and increases warmth by building blood and acts as a cleanser for the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems. It has been popularly used by herbalists to treat a wide range of problems and to enhance the effectiveness of many other herbs.

It is unlikely that any great harm will come to anyone in 10 days of fasting with this balance of nutrition, but many people find it too harsh a regime for the benefits. For those who don't know the recipe, this is it;

* 2 tbsp lemon juice (1/2 lemon)

* 2 tablespoons of grade B maple syrup

* cayenne pepper to taste (a good pinch)

* 12 oz of hot, filtered water

Estimate the quantity you are likely to drink in a day and prepare in advance. Your consumption may vary from 6 to 12 glasses of the Lemonade Diet a day. Be sure to drink at least 6 glasses.

Each morning the recipe says you should drink a quart of water with 2 teaspoons of non-iodized sea salt in it. This will help to keep your bowels moving and start the cleanse. At night, you drink a cup of laxative tea.

The Lemonade Diet seems harsh but there are people who have experimented and found you can eat certain foods. There are ways of dealing with unpleasant side effects. I would strongly recommend some support from people who have used the Lemonade Diet. These measures will help you stay on the Lemonade Diet for long enough to make your own mind up about it.Nothing works for everybody. There are gentler ways to both de-tox and lose weight, though the Lemonade Diet is fast and cheap.

It really is up to you. I recommend educating yourself as much as possible before embarking on the Lemonade Diet. Whatever you decide, the best of success to you!
