Helpful Tips You Should Know Before You Hire a Moving Company

Jan 8, 2008
If you ever had the pleasure of packing and moving a household to an entirely new location you know the daunting and stressful task at hand. But for those of you who have never experienced this kind of challenge I offer a few recommendations to make planning your move a better one right from the start.

It is much more challenging trying to decide which moving company to go with than you could ever think possible. How do you decide where and when to begin the process with so many options? You first need to do some homework and you can do this right from your computer at work or at home.

In my experience I suggest right from the start to do some research about movers and packers. You need to select at least four to five moving companies that you can get quotes from. This is a very important start to the whole process. Most moving companies want your business and will usually work hard to accommodate you so you can rest assured that their pricing will be competitive with their competitors.

You should also get very familiar with all the terminology associated with moving so that you can better understand your contract with your moving company. Know the difference between a binding and a non-binding estimate. Get background information from whoever you are interested in. Look for a company that provides an email address that you can correspond with that actually responds to you. Ask a lot of questions. A great moving company will have listed in their website many suggestions as well to help keep you organized and on track.

I feel it is important to look at all the details listed on the company's website. A great and reliable moving company should have all the services they offer posted as well as their service history and a few customer satisfaction testimonials. At least this way you can get a feel for the way a company treats its customers and how well their customer service department handles any issues that may arise.

Another great piece of advice is to actually ask around. Sometimes the best advice and information comes from your neighbor or friend or better yet a family member. They can be your most reliable source of non-bias information and will always be truthful on their recommendation.

Most people you know probably moved at least twice in their life time. Everyone has a story to tell. Gather as much details about their move. Whether their move was a smooth transition or a horrible experience find out why and try to learn from their experiences. If you find tat you don't really have anyone to ask you can always rely on the web for tons of information whether you're moving locally or internationally.
Once you generated a list I strongly recommend that you contact the better business bureau and find out if the company you want to make your move with is in compliance and registered with the Department of Transportation.
