What You Need To Know About Tubal Ligation Reversal

Jan 9, 2008
Hundreds of thousands of women decide each year to have surgery such as tubal ligation to keep them from having more children. Most of these are quite happy with their decision. But there is a minority, about 6%, who will decide due to changes in circumstances that they do indeed want a child. For most of this group, having the chances of having their own child again can be increased by having another surgery done. This surgery is called a tubal ligation reversal.

However some women will opt to have tubal ligation reversal surgery not because they want children but rather to help stop the effects they experience and which are commonly referred to as "post tubal ligation syndrome". A woman who suffers from this particular syndrome will suffer from a number of different health problems.

For some women, they find that they start to suffer from the symptoms associated with the menopause much earlier than expected. Also for quite a few, they find that their libido and sex drive is almost non existent and they find that the symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome become what worse. There are even cases where the woman will suffer from hot or cold flashes along with trouble sleeping and their moods can be somewhat erratic.

Although such things may make a woman want to rush right into having a tubal ligation reversal done, there are several things which have to be considered first. Among the first will be discussing with your potential surgeon just what kind of surgery was done in the first place so that he can determine if a reversal is feasible.

Secondly a woman's age will need to be taken into consideration when she is thinking about having her tubal ligation procedure reversed. In fact for women over the age of 40 should actually spend some time discussing the matter with their doctor in order to see what their chances of the procedure succeeding are. Certainly the actual amount of damage that has been caused to a woman's fallopian tubes during the tubal ligation surgery can have a serious effect on whether the reversal procedure will be a success or not.

The women who are likely to find that the reversal procedure will be a success for them are those who have either had a small section of their fallopian tubes removed. Also are those women who had chosen to have their tubes tied using clips or rings.

As you can understand from the above factors, your potential surgeon will most definitely need to have access to and review the surgical and post op notes from your original surgery. He should then schedule an appointment or use some other arrangement (if not to be a local procedure) to discuss your situation with you and the alternative of IVF if that applies.

As you can see there is much to be reviewed and discussed with your potential surgeon. In the end the two of you will have to decide if tubal ligation reversal surgery is actually the best option for you given your history and present condition.
