Tips On Owning A Fabulous Ferret

Jan 11, 2008
Fun does come in small packages!

A pet ferret can be a lot of work, but is also a very rewarding experience for many. If you are seeking a pet that will keep you on-the-go and entertained, a ferret may be perfect for you.

Ferrets are small animals, and you will be easily able to lift and carry one anytime. No back injuries will occur from lifting your pet. However, don't let their small size fool you into thinking they are dull. On the contrary, ferrets are inquisitive, and love exploring.

And they don't need a whole lot of care other than in the entertainment department. But if your ringmaster duties should ever be put on hold for too long, the little critter will easily find other ways to amuse itself, and those ways might involve various pieces of your furniture and knick knacks, so be warned!

When you decide to get one of these cute little creatures as a pet and companion, you should take the time to learn about their needs. You will need to purchase a few things to get yourself started -- including a proper cage, proper ferret food and vitamins, and toys.

You should also plan to take the animal to the vet within the first few weeks that you own it. It will need to visit the vet yearly, much like any other pet that you may have cared for in the past. Owning any pet is a lot of time and commitment -- almost as much as having a baby in the home. You are responsible for entertaining this little creature and making sure that it stays safe.

The best option for someone considering getting a ferret is to head to the animal shelter and spend some time with one. This will give you a good idea of what ferrets are like, and whether your personality matches with his or hers.

Furthermore, playing and interacting with a ferret at an animal shelter can give you an indication about their needs and your desire to provide for those needs. For example, a "kit" or baby ferret, requires a great deal of work in training and caring.

Therefore, a kit ferret may not be best suited to you if this is your first attempt. Consider beginning with an adult ferret, which will allow you to learn about their needs and habits. Someday, you could then try a younger animal as a pet, watching it explore and grow over the years.

So if you are seeking a small, playful pet for your home, a ferret might just fit the bill.
