Indoor Tanning FAQ: Answers to Common Questions

Jan 16, 2008
If you have never participated in indoor tanning, you are likely filled with questions about how it works and whether or not the process is safe. As with any procedure that involves altering your body in any way, it is important for you to gather as much information as possible. Although thousands of people enjoy indoor tanning on a daily basis, the process does affect your skin and your body. Therefore, you should learn the facts about indoor tanning before you decide whether or not it is right for you.

Comparing Indoor Tanning to Outdoor Tanning

Deciding between indoor tanning and outdoor tanning is really a matter of personal preference. Many tanners feel that indoor tanning is a more effective method for obtaining a great, year-round tan. Other tanners, on the other hand, prefer to get their tans outdoors because of the natural benefits associated with sun exposure. Both methods expose your skin to ultraviolet rays, so care must be taken to properly protect your skin.

When participating in indoor tanning, you do have the luxury of monitoring the amount of exposure that you receive. In fact, each state has its own regulations and the FDA has created guidelines that must be strictly followed when it comes to the amount of exposure that a person may receive from an indoor tanning facility.

Seeing Results

When obtaining an indoor tan, it typically takes a few sessions before you will begin to see any noticeable changes to our skin tone. It will take somewhere around eight to ten sessions before your base tan will develop, though the exact number of sessions it will take is dependent upon your skin type. After your base tan has been created, you will only need to go to the tanning bed about one or two times each week in order to maintain your tan. It is important to note that you can still get burned when you go outdoors, even after developing your base tan. Therefore, it is important to continue to use proper sun protection when going outdoors.

Picking the Right Tanning Oil

If you are planning to tan in an indoor tanning bed, you need to make sure to select the proper tanning oil. Tanning oils for outdoor use have some different ingredients from those for indoor use and these ingredients can reduce the effectiveness of your tanning session. More specifically, outdoor tanning oils can leave a film on the tanning bed that will get in the way of the tanning process.
