Are There Any Natural Remedies For Insomnia?

If you can't sleep for any decent length of time chances are you have insomnia. The majority of people will have difficulty sleeping at some point in their lives, it may be caused by changing jobs, a new born baby or moving home. Luckily most people are able to regain their normal sleeping pattern after some time. Then there are the people who suffer from chronic insomnia. These people have difficulties sleeping on a regular basis. No matter whether it's chronic or temporary, there are things that can be done to help with insomnia.

Causes of Insomnia

Insomnia can be cause by a number of different things. Diet is one major cause that should be looked at. If you are drinking large amounts of caffeine-loaded coffee during the day and before bed this will undoubtedly affect your sleep. Although drinking alcohol can make you sleepy, it can in fact cause a restless sleep.

Living a stressful life does not help either. There are so many things to stress about these days, whether is be about work, family, money or health. An active mind prevents us from sleeping properly.

If you hear noises whilst you try and sleep this makes sleeping extremely difficult. Perhaps you work the night-shift and sleep during the day. Or maybe you live on a busy street, next to a railway line or under a flight path. Any of these things may be stopping you from having a good night's rest.

Natural Ways to Help with Insomnia

Relaxing the mind and body through meditation or yoga will go a long way to help. If you are physically active during the day you will probably sleep better at night. Simply adding an exercise program to your daily routine will greatly help with your nightly slumber.

Reduce your caffeine and alcohol intake too. If you like to drink something hot before going to be choose something herbal such as Red Bush or Camomile.

If you want to block out noises try wearing earplugs or install double or even triple glazing to your windows.

Herbal remedies are very popular for insomnia such as Valerian and Camomile. It might surprise you to know that Valerian is a natural tranquilizer. Passion flower is also good and is a natural sedative.

Hops which are used in the production of beer can be taken by making into a tea or you can sleep with a pillow filled with hops.

A Word of Caution

If you are unsure about taking natural remedies always double check with a doctor. Most herbs are safe however some can interact with other medication or shouldn't be taken whilst pregnant.
