Treating a cold sore with these time-proven methods will give you quick, lasting success. Read this informative article now. You will get some proven and excellent techniques for treating a cold sore.

Treating a cold sore is not a pleasant experience. They are painful, embarrassing, and generally quite a hassle. And they always seem to come at the worst possible time.

Cold sores, fortunately, are created on the surface where you can treat them. If they were internal, as some diseases are, they would be life threatening.

Treating a cold sore successfully means you must adjust the treatment based on the stage of your cold sore symptoms.

These are the variations of cold sore treatment methods for each symptom.

1. The first stage of a cold sore is the tingling stage. The herpes virus has become active and is moving to the surface. When it gets there, it will infect thousands of nerve cells in its effort to replicate.

At this stage you should put something cold on the area. Ice cubes in a plastic bag work well. You can also use a cold can of soda. Cold really discourages the virus and can cause it to give up before it actually creates the sore.

2. If you miss the tingling stage, the virus will enter the cells. This infection causes swelling to happen. Application of ice is still the treatment of choice with these cold sore symptoms. This reduces swelling, reduces the heat in the area, and does give some comfort.

3. If you did not stop the virus before this point, the cold sore will now break open and start weeping fluid teaming with new virus. This is caused by the destruction of thousands of nerve cells. From now on, your cold sore is in the healing phase.

You can still use ice to reduce heat and swelling. But application of cold does tend to slow healing of cold sores or any wound.

Treating a cold sore at this stage primarily requires you to cleanse the wound as often as possible with alcohol or peroxide. I prefer peroxide because it also adds some extra healing oxygen to the sore.

Applying a drug store product with a numbing agent, like Campho-Phenique, can greatly improve comfort without using ice.

4. Treating a cold sore, from this point on, calls for applying warmth as much as possible. This will speed healing by bringing more blood to the area.

Keep cleansing the area, even when scabbed over. Keep using the Campho-Phenique or whatever treatment you choose. Drug store cold sore treatments are great for comfort. But they generally will not shorten the duration by any measurable degree.

HOW TO APPLY HEAT. To apply healing warmth, you can use a washcloth or paper towel dipped in hot water. You also can dampen the washcloth and warm up in your microwave. Just be careful not to burn your skin.

A better way of treating a cold sore is by the use of a warm tea bag. This not only provides healing warmth, but also applies some great anti-viral ingredients found in the tea plant.

PLEASE USE CAUTION. Cold sores, which are another name for oral herpes, are extremely contagious. You can easily infect others or create new areas of infection on yourself.

If you have seen folks with numerous cold sores around their mouth, these are likely spread from the original cold sore. Spreading it to your eyes is especially dangerous. It can cause permanent vision damage.

When treating a cold sore, be careful not to touch the sore with your fingers. Use cotton balls or tissues to cleanse and apply any treatment. Always wash your hands after working on the sore. Hand sanitizing gel is great insurance against spreading the cold sore.

In conclusion, keep in mind to apply cold when the sore is being created and heat during the healing phase. Continue to cleanse the wound and wash your hands often when treating a cold sore.
