5 Bad Behaviors At Gold's Gym To Watch Out For

Jan 18, 2008
Gold's Gym Has Great Equipment, Too Bad About Some of the Members

I was a Gold's Gym member for 5 years and really enjoyed the place for the most part. The equipment was cutting edge, they had tons of free weights, the gym hours were good, etc. The problem is that Gold's attracts a certain segment of the fitness population. I'm not sure where these Neanderthals come from, but these guys are obnoxious. I want to point out some of this bad behavior, so we can begin to put it to an end. I know that Gold's isn't the only place where this exists.

1) Dropping Dumbbells After Every Set: This sort of drama drives me nuts. These guys have the Napoleon Complex in a major way! It is almost as if they believe that dropping the weights is hardcore and that if you don't you aren't working out hard enough. Their argument is that they are lifting heavy and I must lift wussy weights. The funny thing is that I use 100+ pound dumbbells in several lifts and these guys are dropping anything over 60 pounds! Maybe they aren't strong enough to set their weights back to the ground slowly.

2) Excessive Grunting During Sets: Now, I do realize that if someone is attempting a 700+ single in the squat or deadlift that they probably will make a bit of noise. I'm not talking about those guys. I'm addressing the guy screaming doing a set of 10 reps on preacher curls, or during a set of leg extensions. Seriously, this is just as bad if not worse than dropping dumbbells. Gym manager's need to do a better job monitoring this stuff. This creates a prison like atmosphere in the gym. My favorite thing to do is to sit next to these guys grab a heavier weight and do it for more reps in complete silence and then give them a smirk.

3) Not Putting Away Their Weights: There is nothing worse than walking into a free weight area with dumbbells all over the ground and half loaded barbells. This is really a selfish behavior, because it shows blatant disrespect for the gym members as well as the employees. This is a really big problem in every gym I have worked out in. It is especially bad in places that are considered hardcore gyms, but certainly isn't isolated to these places.

4) Performing Sets in Front the Dumbbell Racks: This is not thinking of others who share the same gym. The guys that do this are selfish and couldn't care less about your workout. While they are doing this, you can't access the weights they are in front of and you can't put any dumbbells away. I wish more gym employees would take the steps necessary to stop this poor behavior.

5) Super-setting With 3-4 Pieces of Equipment: This isn't a problem as long as the person who does this allows you to do sets when they are on a different piece of equipment. The problem is when they believe that they should be able to use that equipment uninterrupted for long periods of time. This should be outlawed in the gym! Unless it is during a slow period, the rule should be one piece of equipment at a time.

Summary: Gold's Gym is a great company, not trying to bag on them at all. It is in these typical hardcore gyms where the worst behaviors occur. My point in this whole article is to reach out to gym members and the staff to try and prevent as much of this bad behavior as possible.
