Pilates Benefits The Whole Body - Without The Pain

In the 20th century, Joseph Pilates developed a physical fitness system which cam to be named after him, i.e. the Pilates Method or simply Pilates. He personally referred to this method as Contrology as it encouraged the use of mind to control the muscles. Pilates authored 2 books on this method of exercise and from this simple start there are now hundreds of them.

Pilates is a fitness regime designed to balance, stretch and strengthen the body with particular emphasis on the deep torso muscles. It also uses the mind to improve movement, efficiency and muscle control, which why it is often said that Pilate exercise somehow improves one's mental state.

The Benefits of Pilates

Pilates yields numerous health benefits, from flexibility to muscular and mental coordination, such as:

*Longer, leaner body.

* A stronger, more flexible spine.

* Increased strength without adding muscle bulk.

* Improved posture.

* More efficient respiratory and circulatory systems.

* Increased joint range of motion.

* Relief from back pain.

* Relief from stress.

Basically, the buttocks, back and abdomen are targeted to strengthen the body core so that they act as a firm support system for the spine.

Studies have revealed that the Pilates system is so gentle it can be integrated into rehabilitative exercise, as well as physical therapy programs that are designed to speed recovery of soft tissue injuries. This is why it is recommended by many orthopedists, chiropractors and physical therapists.

This form of exercise can be performed at home with a DVD, book or video to guide you, but if you can attend a class with a professional instructor this is probably the better choice. An instructor will ensure that you are performing the movements correctly.
